The mix to head for here is the first one – as it’s the one where the Shapeshifters build through some strong material from Mike Monday and Skylark to class cuts such as Grant Nelson’s ‘Spellbound’ and the Vanjee remix of Lil’ Mo Yin Yang’s ‘Reach’. Disc two starts well – the boys’ remake of ‘Chime’ a surprising success – but then tries to cram too much into a small space, with a re-edit of ‘Lola’s Theme’ not helping massively. A real bonus is found in CD3 though, a disc of influences – and with the major labels refusing to play ball, this opens the door for an interesting blend of Patrice Rushen, Tears for Fears, Al Green and Barrington Levy. Well worth acquiring, especially for CD1.
