Dave Seaman has been making compilations for about the same length of time that most of us have been out of short trousers, and his best work has tended to be for Renaissance. So it’s something of a shame that he has revealed on his website that this might be his last of this kind, given licensing problems and the difficulties in making a mix that still sounds current four months after it was done. He has no fears on that score, for the two sets are characteristically intelligent in their choice of material, though CD1 almost leaves it too long before going for the jugular. Seaman gives the music plenty of space, so that each tune has time to evolve and make its mark as well as being part of the bigger, overall mix. It’s when the bass really kicks in, halfway through mix one and earlier in mix two, that these really thrill – but the impact is only felt if you’ve been listening to the whole build up. A fine pair of sets then – let’s just hope they’re not the last!
