The annual compilation released by the venerable Glasgow-based imprint to consolidate its year has become something of an institution in electronic dance music circles. Since starting in 1991, Soma has never stopped upping its game, relentlessly thrusting forth new talent while its formidable roster continues to take the music into previously-uncharted realms [while never losing sight of the dancefloor]. 2009 was a particularly strong year for the label, as evidenced by the immaculate selection here, which includes label veterans Silicone Soul [with the Ripperton mix of ‘Dust Ballad II’ off their stellar self-titled album], Funk Devoid & Sian, magnificently sleazy Let’s Go Outside, Christian Prommer remixing Master H‘s ‘Magic K‘, Slam remixing Samuel L. Sessions, a mindblowing Autechre remix of The Black Dog’s ‘Tunnels Ov Set’ and Slam’s own material represented by a Joris Voorn remix of ‘Ghost Song’ and D’Julz’s steaming treatment of their 1993 anthem ‘Positive Education‘. New names here to watch out for include Gary Beck, Harvey McKay and Itamar Sagi; all having caused unmitigated carnage with the three tracks here. The packaging was designed by online competition winner Ewan Lackie, perfectly presenting another cracker of a compilation.
