It’s possible to count on one hand the number of great clubs which have survived since the 90s but Glasgow’s Sub Club has remained an epicentre of musical fanaticism and rampant hedonism since 1988, boasting that rare electric atmosphere with long-standing resident DJs who know their punters and what will blow them through the roof. These two CDs presented by Saturday mainstays Harri the Magnificent and Domenic Cappello, aka Subculture, and Sunday’s Optimo, aka JD Twitch and JG Wilkes present the thousands who’ve passed through its portals with the ultimate souvenir. The former unleash a euphoric barrage of painstakingly-sourced classics representing 20 years of tackle which has rocked the Sub, including Carl Craig, Steve Poindexter, Joey Beltram, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Jimmy Bo Horne and Derrick May, all weaved into one gorgeous peak. Optimo’s premise is that anything goes musically allowing them to veer from Leather Nun’s punk to the Orb during their low-slung psychedelic space disco electro-ride. There’s a unique soul-warming flow to both sets, fittingly released on Glasgow’s longest-standing label and thankfully capturing for posterity a place where time stands still and music really is the answer.
