The BBC Radiophonic Workshop – A Retrospective
Mute

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop has been highly influential in its use of generated sound, and this selection of their best past moments brings together everything from short radio station idents to their undisputed biggest hit, the ‘Doctor Who’ theme. CD1 is a fascinating collection of audio postcards and sketches, some of them as short as 10 seconds, while CD2 brings out a few more TV themes and moving instrumentals like the opening ‘Brighton Pier’, part of the music for the radio ‘Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy’. No serious devotee of electronic music will want to be without something by the Radiophonic Workshop, celebrating 50 years since it began, and this is a good place to start. It’s just a crying shame they closed it!
