Photek
Aviator E.P.
Photek Productions

Of all the producers of electronic music working in Britain today, Photek remains one of the most fiercely original and diverse – and ‘Aviator’ shows off just how many strings he has to his bow. We start with slowed up house, the title track setting off with rock heavy beats before introducing a killer, floor filling riff to proceedings. Photek revisits this dark, doomy sound later in ‘Cecconi’, where the bass drums drop like lead weights. ‘Totem’ brings in his breaks legacy, syncopated and edgy as it looks for somewhere to rest, while ‘Sleepwalking’ is a smoky torch song, its main hook “someday you’re gonna realise you’ve been sleepwalking through it all” set to become something of a mantra once you’ve heard it several times. The FaltyDL remix takes this raw vocal material and spins it into deep house. Five parts to a wonderful EP then, five more reasons to keep a very close eye on developments over the summer, and – of course – five dancing men!
