Every so often a nice surprise plops through the old letter-box unannounced with little or no blurb and turns out to be a belter. Such is the case with this CD by Derek Carr on the label set up by Dublin’s Nice And Nasty club. From the flyer they seem to have connections with Soma which is an automatic seal of quality. Ultimately there is just the music to go on and it’s fantastic. Boasting a lovely, warm late-night vibe throughout, Derek homages classic house and techno elements from early acid through flickering Motor City melodies to deep house as wallowed in by New York’s Strictly Rhythm and Nu-Groove labels in the early 90s. Track titles are rudimentary and also not realy necessary, although it has to be said that the closing ‘Neon Scattered Pattern’ is a sublime romp through subterranean Mr Fingers territory. A great way to start a label and also advertise your club. Like I said, quality.
