Ambivalent is Kevin McHugh making his Minus debut with a big, sticky splash. ‘R U OK’ is clubland’s sickest anthem of the moment, firmly in the tradition of other ‘message’ tunes like ‘Rise From Your Grave’, ”Mr Kirk’s Nightmare’ and anything else which might play havoc with the mental state under certain conditions. It’s also hilariously funny, if close to home, being a twisted romp topped with a Phuture voice trying to ‘assist’ the young lady, first out of the hole, then ‘try one of these’ – all over a nasty hornet-in-the-y-fronts buzz-riff, malevolent rumble undertow and all-round sick-bucket momentum. Fantastic! There’s also a very useful acapella with infinite headfuck possibilities then flip for a pair of bass-heavy wobblers called ‘Indecision’ and ‘Nugget’. Right now, every Minus release is deadly on all levels. Are you OK?
