ALEX SMOKE
NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN
SOMA

The kind of refried electronic soul that Alex Smoke seems to be able to knock out in his sleep, and one of the highlights of his recent “Paradolia” album.  The original mix still resonates thanks to Smoke’s haunting vocal input – a lost song echoing in distant airwaves.  Ada of Cologne’s Areal Records offers an epic masterpiece that puts the song on centrestage, wringing the emotion out of it against an almost classical minimalist backing.  Slam were so taken with the song they’ve also provided a remix, a sleek techno groove that throbs ‘n’ thrums under the full vocal, subtle riffs working their way through, and already seeing support from jocks like Pete Tong.  Smoke’s own Floor mix is the where the ..err.. floor action is, though.  Built around twisted acid motifs and glitchy drums, the vocals are cut-up, stretched, and generally messed around in true warehouse fashion.
