Christian Smith is in the enviable position where, often with studio partner John Selway, he can create monumental dancefloor crushers which ensnare the DJ spectrum from house to techno [with trouser-merchants in between too]. After the commotion caused by the pair’s ‘Totaol Departure’ this latest solo outing marking Smith’s new deal with John Digweed’s Bedrock is a total bomb, already causing a fracas with his usual strategy of building steadily on a strong riff amidst all manner of drones, melodies and efx before it all goes off. ‘Friendly Skies’ tones it down slightly but is equally as effective with its relentless organ prodding and deadly bass undertow, again building to danger levels. These unashamed monsters could only be made by a man with an open-minded attitude to making any crowd go ballistic.
