As a hot pursuer of The Dog’s gloriously-pendulous testicles for nearly 20 years, it can safely be trumpeted in this camp that Further Vexations is this ever-evolving beast’s masterpiece, managing to make one of electronic music’s few deeply-gripping political statements with its bleak but beautiful evocations of public ignorance and Orwellian soul-sucking.
Typically, they’ve not taken the easy route for the latest 12-inch, going with one of the darker excursions in ‘Tunnels Ov Set’, whose Crookes Mix [named after a dodgy area of Sheffield] establishes a hauntingly-atmosphere before the kek-detonating percussive clatter steams in. Two remixes take it in interesting [but not necessarily better] directions: Bass Soldier opts for cold and nasty dubstep while old Warp muckers Autechre create a bumpy aural ruin littered with nuclear waste and chemical toilet nightmares. In total contrast, ‘Seti’ eases this formidable set out with resonant ambient calm.
