Harvey McKay
Nightwalker / Raw
Soma

One of the brightest stars in the current Glasgow underground, Harvey has found a rightful home for his unfeasibly large talent on Soma and already dropped a killer statement of intent with his debut album, Machine Makes Noise [which I heartily recommend]. In fact, this review of his new single can double as one for the album too, a merciless barrage of electronic innovation referencing past giants but adding Harvey’s unique vision which manages to weld bottomless house-scapes with bollock-battering techno assaults. Tracks like ‘Analog Freak’ and ‘Bad Trip’ display a no-messing invention which morphs into a subtler, but no less lethal, incarnation on his stunning new single. Quite simply, ‘Nightwalker’ and ‘RAW’ are two of the most downright relentlessly malevolent techno tracks to thunder out of Satan’s rectum for a while, deceptively simple as he weaves throbbing low-end frequencies over a granite kick, embroiling with subtle percussion slashes or disembodied vocals. Apparently, Richie Hawtin’s most played tune in recent weeks and it’s not hard to see why. On a big system in the early hours they could both be absolutely devastating. Clearly a talent to watch out for in 2010.
