The Twilite album was one of the year’s strangest but established the mysterious JPLS as one of the furthest out exponents of the minimal sound. Tracks didn’t so much groove as pulse like sinister shadows lashed with other-worldy sounds and textures. At times a bit of a headfuck, always intriguing. The ‘Fuckshuffle’ EP takes a more straightforward approach, even floor-friendly with its more direct beats, acid patterns and riffs dogfighting . The title track recalls ‘Acid tracks’ itself with its stealthy plod and 303 motifs before ‘Activatroy’ brings in sinister Alan Vega-esque vocal whispers and sonic nightmare ambience as the acid machine goes ‘Phwoar’. ‘Quasarlude’ is a messed-up metallic wrecking session before ‘Synthesis’ takes it out with a crunching groove on which a lone guinea-pig perches with strides round with his ankles. Fearless tackle like the Black Dog and this point to a healthily experimental but very strange route for certain strains of techno but, as always, this can only be totally vital.
