Orde Meikle playing this twice at the last night of Slam in Glasgow around eleven years ago. Grown men were in tears as emotions ran wild. ‘Positive Education’ always had that effect and anyone who lost it in a decent club since its original 1993 release has a similar memory of its gorgeous, heart-storming power, the strings in the drop and one of electronic dance music’s most beloved hooks. It reappeared in 1995 as a double set with new treatments from Richie Hawtin, Derrick Carter & Chris Nazuka and Morganistic and now returns again with a stellar brace of reinterpretations from the direction of France. Paris-based Paul Ritch, who first appeared in 2006 and has since released ethereal tackle on labels including Wagon Repair, Sci + Tec and Get Physical, asked to remix his fave tune and didn’t disappoint with this nine-minute bass odyssey where the hippo scrotum lower end underpins deft manipulation of the main riffs, unexpected twists and a drop where he’s obviously savouring every last drop of those timeless melodies. Fellow Parisian D’Julz has been around since the early 90s and turns in two lethal versions, again maximising the bass, homaging the riff and letting fly with some great rampant snare action. Great tracks never die, especially when blessed with tributes like this.
