LEMON8
MODEL8
PLUS 8

Dutch producer Harry Lemon’s ’93 original on Basic Energy is a classic example of the kind of early 90s acid house/pure techno hybrid which would later give way to whatever other new style was beaming in but, for a while, meant some of the greatest electronic dance music the world has seen. For years ‘Model8’ has been the secret weapon of a lucky few DJs – such as Richie Hawtin, who has generously reactivated it on Plus 8. Those jumping snares, that high-pitched whee noise and the halfway drop into acid heaven all still sound great, but the killer punch is provided by Mr Lemon’s remix, a total bomb which comes on like Hardfloor-meets-‘Spastik’ with snares pumped to the fore, huge bass undertow and explosive climaxes. Then, unexpectedly, comes an unearthly string drop with haunting chords, which then piles back into the military tattoo on the brain. It’s the sort of missile DJs like Weatherall would take for a weekend out and tilt dance music’s axis for the following few weeks. It’s that special.
