Mathias Kaden from Jena is one of the small pocket of young producers who have made Berlin’s Vakant into one of the labels of 2006. He takes his time and this is his third outing for the label, showing how his take on outer limits-straddling future-tech minimalism is progressing under his own rules. The title track busts out of minimal confines with dextrous percussion additives and other-wordly synth mosaics bouncing around each other but all pointing at the floor. ‘Sinthy Looper’ and ‘Nuance’ are further explorations which often hover in their own radioactive darkness as goats drop their strides. On the evidence of this, it’s rather exciting to try and imagine what further damage Mathias and the Vakant bunch are gonna do in 2007.
