PAUL HARTNOLL

We have missed Orbital, demolishing festivals in their torch-specs and turning out soulfully groundbreaking anthems. Since they disbanded in 2004, Paul Hartnoll has been readying his first solo stuff and this taste of the upcoming album is already causing big ripples. The title track in deed harks back to UK progressive dance music’s early heyday from whence came Orbital, with its heart-elevating melodies and strings but there’s a 21st century technological urgency bubbling in there too. ‘Gloopy’ on the flip is possibly even better with those trademark nagging synth riffs which elevated Orbital [and so many hands] and a sound that just swells with into one glorious noise. The emotional impact kind of reminds me of ‘Smokebelch’. Both tracks are under five minutes but say it all with maximum impact. Welcome back Paul. Few do it better.
