Just when Soma would be perfectly within their rights to sit back and congratulate themselves on a very good 15th year in business indeed, they have to go and finish up with one of their strongest, most groundbreaking releases to date. Since releasing two striking singles last year, Dave Congreve and Mark Rutherford have been locked away with their machines wrenching out their amazing debut album ‘Squints’. ‘Why Must’ is a first taste and manages to push the minimal benchmark further out then it’s ever been. Over a dark, prowling undergrowth, they build the track on an nagging marimba riff which is then distended amidst the sonic hailstorm until it reaches an other-worldly plateau more on a level with Sun Ra or late Miles Davis. It’s totally gripping from start to finish. The flip sees Gaiser shredding it down untilall that’s left is the track’s ghost. Now wait until you hear the album…
