The original is one of the highlights of last year’s Human Response, undoubtedly one of the best albums of 2007. Here Slam’s innate grasp of Detroit soul swelled in the sumptuous strings and acid house dynamics. Now it’s singled out for severe remix treatment. Adam Beyer opts to strip away the strings and home in on turning the percussion into dancefloor-destroying mayhem, adding marimba-like tones and belches from the deep. Silicone Soul have created two beauties, the Darkroom Dubs Remix following the old-fashioned maxim of taking the elements which made the original great, like those strings, and pumping them into a new kind of monster. I love the way you can hear the miniscule gap in the tom-tom loop which is joined by beefy gnu-testicle electro riffs, ebbing and flowing until the strings provide the icing on the cake. Their Hypno House Remix boasts shades of classic early 90s New York with pumping organ riffs, another corker. Barely two months old, 2008 has had its first Slam injection to show who’s boss.
