Missives from Underground Resistance’s mysterious Red Planet satellite come few and far between – this is only the thirteenth release since the early 90s. When they do, it’s cause for major celebration. Few operations in techno come close to the Red Planet in terms of vision, creativity and deathly beautiful execution. ‘The Last Stand’ comes in on a kick and an acidic riff before setting off on an epic voyage which glides through deftly-programmed breaks and those trademark heart-freezing spacial strings, underpinned by a bubbling cauldron of tension stabs, bottomless bass stirrings and whatever’s being beamed in through the starship porthole at the time. It’s staggeringly great. ‘Sunchaser’ sets off on the old canter across the Martian planet-scape with more other-worldly textures and the kind of vibe which comes from no one else. With the new UR showing a dirty funk return to the roots, it looks like that old bunker in Detroit is in one of its active periods. Like I said, cause for celebration, not to mention a bit of fear.
