VARIOUS
CABINET CLASSICS [1994-1998]

A double-headed heavyweight mission here from Plus 8 who perform a massive public service by unleashing two vinyl double packs of nuggets from the vaults of Berlin’s mighty Cabinet label. There’s a good chance the more intrepid revellers out there have encountered the simple but incendiary turbo-grooves propagated by producers like Daniel Paul, DJ Zky and DJ Trike over the last ten years – probably at 5am when everything’s one flowing mess of beautiful detonations. Some of these are captured on the first set with past outings under the names Compass, Cab Drivers and Horseshoe. It’s dominated by deadly 909 programming, particularly the hi-hats which, combined with the overwhelming power-pulse of the basslines, steer the tracks with minimum embellishment – usually just a stab or a dark string line. Sounds like it was mixed live in the studio, which adds to the excitement. The second set contains previously-unreleased corkers like DJ Trike’s self-explanatory ‘Acid Dream’ and Horseshoe’s ‘Bassfunk’, where chomping 303s join in. There will also be a double CD going further into the back catalogue. Plus 8 deserve your left testicle for this move. Fantastic.
