One of my favourite labels from last year busts into 2009 with 23-year-old Warren Brown from Bermondsey following his ‘Heavy Stuff’ EP with another belter adding to his fast-growing rep as one of techno’s bright hopes. ‘War Fear’ uses a roots vocal sample for its title over a slightly sinister jacking throb before ‘Roks Dog’ lets loose the 50ffoot hi-hat adorned with avant drones and jazzy keys. Side B’s ‘He’s So Crazy’ cooks up a rumbling deep house shimmer topped with phone girl, followed by old school Chicago-Detroit acid riffs and female vocal touches accentuating a nod back to the early 90s which he’ll be too young to have experienced but seems to have an innate knack for capturing. A name to watch this year.
