Luciano beats the System…
Every month DMCWORLD travels to one of our favourite clubs on the dance music planet. We kick off with the mighty ‘System’ night in Leeds where last Saturday Luciano, the biggest DJ in Ibiza hit the decks. You can’t get much better than this really. A brilliant venue perfect for your Saturday night madness, a formidable Funktion-One sound system, one of the DJs of the moment and that kind of atmosphere that only a northern crowd can bring us. DMCWORLD’s Tillie Wood was down the front…

The resident duo of Annie Derrez and Bobby O’Donnel expertly opened up the night setting a good party vibe in front of a crowd they obviously knew so well. The atmosphere was electric with a heaving dancefloor awaiting the arrival of captain Cadenza after his cohort Cesar Merveille continued to keep the dancefloor a frenzy with his heady blend of jazz infused, minimal tech house. Lucien Nicolet, Head of Cadenza Records aka Luciano and one seriously cool guy took to the decks for what was to be five and half hours of glorious house music
This Leeds’ club with its vibrant LEDs pulsing through the ceiling was the perfect venue for his set; all eyes on the booth, all arms in the air copying his trademark hand flick, feet pounding the floor to the sound of his Latin and electronic productions witnessing a flawless set that kept the club rocking till close. Luciano once said “my philosophy is that a DJ should always try to transport emotions onto the dance floor.” Mission accomplished.

When did System begin?
“We will celebrate our official 4th birthday on February 4th 2012, but we’ve actually been putting on parties for a lot longer. Shane, Keith and Annie used to do small, intimate parties in pubs just outside of Leeds city centre for a couple of years before this and the night grew organically from there when Shane became the owner of the Mint Club. That’s when we started the night as ‘System’ and I came on board to help.”
What was the idea behind the night?
“There wasn’t really an aim or idea behind the night. We all loved similar music and DJs (and still do) so we just wanted somewhere for us all to get together once a month and invite loads of amazing DJs to play in Leeds.”
What makes System so great?
“Definitely the people and the atmosphere, as well as the music of course. Also the fact that we let our guest DJs play extended sets if they want to, we don’t stick to rigid set times and the focus is always on quality over quantity when it comes to DJs.”
Can you list the 10 best guest DJs that have appeared…
“We’ve just reached over 100 DJs we’ve had perform at ‘System’, but in no particular order…Jeff Mills, Ricardo Villalobos, Mathew Jonson (live), Sven Väth, Loco Dice, Ellen Allien, Martin Buttrich (live), Reboot, Redshape and Steve Bug.”
Plans for 2012?
“We have our 4th birthday coming up on February 4th along with our annual festival, Cocoon In The Park on July 14th and some other new fresh line ups.”
Most famous person spotted on the dancefloor?
“It’s all about the DJ. We’ve had many of them joining us on the dance floor including Loco Dice mixing decks by reaching over from the dancefloor along with Sven joining in the fun at the Cocoon In The Park after party.”
