Back To Mine With Jonson, Jonson & Jonson

Jonson, Jonson & Jonson (aka Joe Cang, Danny Schogger & Phil Thornalley) are a North West London based Soul, Funk and Jazz trio. Their release, ‘Keep Falling For It’, landed in 2024, followed by ‘Circles’ in 2025, which was snapped up by Jo Wallace and Ashley Beedle’s Ramrock Records and received support from Gilles Peterson and Tony Blackburn. Aside of their Jonson, Jonson & Jonson project, all three talents are individual artists in their own right too. In addition, Danny Schogger has written and produced hits for Celine Dion and played with George Michael. Joe Cang has written for Aswad (the number one ‘Shine’) and Hall & Oates, as well as releasing music as a solo artist signed to the legendary Clive Davis. Phil has a produced bands like ‘The Cure’, written songs for Natalie Imbruglia (‘Torn’) and played in Bryan Adams’ band. The trio have been busy in the studio and are getting ready to release their debut collaborative album ‘Back to the Buffet’ later this year. As their single ‘Trouble’ lands this week, DMCWorld goes Back To Mine with Jonson, Jonson & Jonson.

Aretha Franklin – Until You Come Back

The greatest female voice for me singing a very early Stevie Wonder song played by great musicians… doesn’t get any better than that!

Aretha Franklin - Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do) (Official Audio)

Sly Stone – Can’t Strain My Brain

A formative teenage soundtrack, raw, rich, slo-mo revolutionary, natural and new. Every emotion covered, bass line traveling the globe and the voice of effortless brilliance with the harmonic free fall of brass and strings, organ and things!

"Can't Strain My Brain" - Sly & The Family Stone

Bill Evans – Peace Piece

Bill Evans’ career was described as ‘the longest suicide note in history’. but this tortured artist created a unique musical language . Fiercely intelligent, groundbreaking musically and uniquely ‘other-worldly’. Conversely his most loved piece is the epitome of minimal playing soaked beneath a waterfall of feeling. Title always relevant.

Bill Evans "Peace Piece"

Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On

One of the greatest male singers and sings with so much soul and emotion unlike anyone else, singing a song with a great message from its time.

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Ellis Regina and Tom Jobim – s Aguas de Março

Brazilian Music is my passion and here you have one of the greatest female singers of the genre and the father of the Bossa Nova who basically invented the style and wrote so many classic songs from a period that we all know but often without realising it!

Elis Regina & Tom Jobim - "Aguas de Março" - 1974

Tappa Zukie & Horace Andy – Natty Dread A Weh She Want

Mind-blowing early exposure to this anarchic sonic saturation of brass, bass, the sweet tones of Horace Andy and the face front chat of Tappa Z, never the same again.

Tappa Zukie & Horace Andy - Natty Dread A Weh She Want

Todd Rundgren – Useless Begging

A relatively unknown song by the American polymath Todd Rundgren. Songwriter, producer, musician and intellectual. To many ears this is 70’s garbage. To me , as a 14 year-old, it was a musical epiphany that inspired me to become a musician. Ain’t life weird?

Todd Rundgren - Useless Begging (Lyrics Below) (HQ)

John Coltrane – Africa Brass

Cinematic, panoramic sonic time travel. The soundtrack to endless train journeys when the Walkman was new! The sound of possibly, nature, history and the future. No vocalist but the  inspiring and expressive voice of JC matches any other.

The John Coltrane Quartet - Africa

VEGYN – The Path Less Travelled

Transcendental . Trippy. Somehow always moving relentlessly forward , reaching toward a bold , utopian horizon.

Vegyn - The Path Less Travelled

Jonson, Jonson & Jonson – Trouble

Channelling the influences and inspirations above and our own feelings of frustration and futility in the face of so much human suffering, stubbiness and sadness, Trouble is a head nodding question of ’Are we only born to make more trouble?’ No is the answer, music is the method to avoid the madness.
