Label Spotlight – Make Your Era

Make Your Era is an electronic dance music record label founded by Vibe Chemistry. Recognised for its roots within the drum and bass scene, MYE champions upcoming talent to release a new era of dance music and plays a key role in artist development. DMCWorld checks in with Vibe Chemistry to find more about the label.

When did you launch?

MakeYouEra Records first launched 24th February 2023, with our first release being 9th June 2023.

What’s the meaning behind the name?

Make Your Era is about working with up and coming artists who create something fresh, new sounds, new taste of music, originality, and taking music careers into their own hands and therefore making the new era of music.

Where are you based?

Our team is based in Milton Keynes, and we work with artists internationally.

How did the label come about?

After hearing tonnes of artists experiences, including some of our own, we wanted to be one of the first labels that focuses on fairness, in favour of the artists, without judgement of an artists status, views or followers. We want the attention to be focused on the music artists create. Creating a family-like community with friendly, kind creatives who desire to learn, grow and are hungry to make it in music. We offer knowledge based on personal experiences and the modern industry, a record label team by successful artists and experts in marketing.

What is your core musical style and ethos behind the label?

We are the home for artists that can’t be boxed into one space, they’re not restricted to one sound, one genre or one label, we are a home for original creatives who are not afraid to be forward thinking; out of the box thinkers.

Who does what at the label?

Our in house team of 3 covers most of the record labels to do list. Vibe Chemistry (the founder & artist), Jai (Artist Development & marketing manager) and Tom (A&R and artist) are the core members of MakeYourEra. In the earlier days of MakeYourEra we had another Tom on our team who took care of all things content and socials. All of the team listen to demo submissions from our website, we all have different music tastes and different perspectives. Jai is a huge music fan, and has a listener’s ear, whereas Vibe Chemistry and Tom (aka Contact Point) both have producer and performer ears, who both also have very different tastes in music. Tom sends finals to our mastering engineer, offers advice on records and finalises all contracts. Vibe Chemistry is always actively seeking out new talent and takes care of the branding. Jai is the label’s overall manager, covering all things marketing, socials, articles, website management, sending off PR, books content days, responds to emails, covers all interviews, artist development, manages MYE playlists, arranges influencers, creates artwork and visualisers.

What was your first single release?

Our first releases were EP’s, Medicine’s “Find Some Soul EP”

What’s your A&R process and how can producers get demos to you?

We take demo submissions exclusively through our website and demos email: demos@makeyourera.com Our A&R process offers not only an artists prospective but also a dance music listeners prospective. We may listen to your demo and offer advice on how to finalise your track, sometimes it could be something like turning vocal volumes up, adding atmosphere or adjusting instruments – whatever it may be, we want the best for your music!

What’s the best thing about running a record label?

The best thing has to be meeting so many interesting creatives from different walks of life, completely different people, who can work together in harmony. Although my favourite part (hey i’m Jai) is being the first to listen to music before anyone else, there is something so special about listening to musicians pour their heart and soul into music, it feels like a gift every single time – like a new era that has a potential to take over the whole industry and it’s my job to help their music be heard.

And what difficulties as a label have you had to overcome?

I think the most difficult parts of running a record label has to be trying to convince introverted creatives to share their music on social media. Many artists see social media creatives as influencers, which we don’t expect them to be, but to guide them to a place where they are comfortable to put their face to their art where many lack confidence can be incredibly difficult.

I think all artists could find value in my next statement; “This is the modern day way, you have more control, ownership and freedom than many artists had before you, you can control your artist image, how many people find your music and you don’t have to pay for it. People fall in love with the journey, the imperfections and the climb to success, so post your worst videos, and practise and get better, nothing is permanent. You can reinvent yourself as many times as you like as there are no rules. Nobody is going to know you exist if you don’t tell people you exist.”

Do you host label events or plan to?

We have hosted label events! MYE hosted Vibe Chemistry’s album launch party. We collaborated with TouchBase UK where A.M.C headlined and we also hosted a launch party for Eskei83 release in Germany. We have also hosted exclusive artist events – MYE content days. These occasions is for filming MYE In The Mix, our performance

Where would you like to see the label in 5 years?

In 5 years time we would love to be recognised for discovering fresh music, new talent and incredible music. We would love to find a brand or organisation that cares about artists as much as we do, so potentially a collaboration if its the right fit would be fantastic!

What pearls of wisdom would you offer to those considering setting up their own label?

Work with friendly, kind artists, be fair and continuously educate yourself. Build a network around you and just remember, music marinates, not every song blows up on release day.

What’s coming up on the label that you can tell us about?

Our next releases offer a brand new sound to dance music, we have Harry Shotta debut on MakeYourEra Records, and we have a record which is full of depth and emotions coming out where the writer of the track is a featured artist, which is not the norm in the music industry and we think it is important for writers to be featured when they want to be, so stay tuned to find out!
