A one-time make of hip-hop beats, Holland’s Benny Sings eventually found himself singing over the beats he was producing, and – whilst he’s still involved with producing hip-hop – it’s the singing voice he’s decided to follow with Sonar Kollektiv. For which everyone should congratulate him.
The man has a lovely, beguiling voice, perfect for the sprightly – okay, okay, poppy – grooves that this release is chock to the brim with. Unlikely as it seems with this kind of descriptions, the albums draws you in from the off, the loose-limed “Twist You Around” soon flowing into the sexy “Unconditional Love”, and the nu-funky “N.U”. Or the folksy stop-start “Together”, and broken-beatish “Style Beats Liberation fronts”. Really, this is faultless club-pop that draws on heavily on nu-jazz. But it’s the charismatic singing of Benny himself that sets it apart from others of its ilk.
