Ten years of Brainfeeder is cause for celebration indeed, marking a decade of musical exploration and imagination for Flying Lotus’s label. They would rather you didn’t call them a label though, more an ‘international conspiracy to conquer clichéd sounds’, and a chance to get right away from any genre labels or categories. This handsomely packaged collection of 36 recordings does just that, bringing forward the very best of their roster and showing just what a huge variety of music they have been putting out. The new Ross From Friends track ‘Squaz’ is a great addition, joining the likes of Martyn, Mr Oizo, Teebs, Dorian Concept and Georgia Anne Muldrow. On the more ambient side Lapalux’s ‘Opilio’ is a treat, while label head Flying Lotus appears in several guises – as guest (Matthewdavid’s ‘Group Tea’) as remixer (Brandon Coleman’s ‘Walk Free’) and as genuine solo artist (Ain’t No Coming Back’) In each discipline he excels, as do all those around him, meaning that if invention and originality in music are important to you, then you should hear this collection.
