KMS is 27 years old now and is passing through the generations, Saunderson senior (Kenny) having handed it over to junior (Dantiez). Whereas a lot of techno labels are justifiably looking at their past with some pride, KMS is looking to the future with a collection showing where the label is at right now. And it’s a pretty good place if the super funky organ of Lionel Weets’ ‘We Can’t Sleep’ or the nicely screwed-up ‘Freaky Funk’ of Joe Brunning is anything to go by. Dantiez himself is shaping up as a producer of some repute, too, and his ‘Hologram’ collaboration with Ken Young works well. Meanwhile Joe Mesmar’s ‘Hot Trouble’ is the definition of solid, while perhaps the standout cut is Philipp Ort’s ‘Dwell’, with its deeper than deep funk. A really good selection that confirms Detroit is still in rude health!
