Big Freeze 3: Mixed By Chris Coco
Platipus

The prospect of acid house veteran and renowned chill-master Chris Coco putting together the latest volume in platipus’ Big Freeze series is a succulent one and he doesn’t disappoint. He’s certainly had enough practice, spinning around the globe while following musical projects starting with Coco Steel & Lovebomb and most recently his City Reverb band project. Here he presents a bevy of happening artists on CD1, including Booka Shade, Quiet Village, the mighty Hercules & Love Affair, Aeroplane [whose space-boogie ‘Caramellas’ can only be dedicated to my pet rabbit], dubbed-out Todd Terje and Lexx’s mix of Smith & Mudd’s ‘Shulme’, a gentle canter laced with guitars. Prins Thomas’ remix of the Figurines’ ‘The Air We Breathe’ recalls nothing so much as Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson, which gives an idea of the orbit Chris is prone to take. Kicking off with City Reverb’s vibrant ‘Pinsharp’, CD2 sticks with the new while also casting its net further back, artists including Loco Dice, Speck Mountain, Lulu Rouge, Au Revoir Simone, Notwist and Allez Allez’s classic ‘African Queen’. A fine set: the proverbial journey which can be undertaken both jiggling or levitating to the ceiling like the cartoon dog who’s just been at the biscuit tin.
