El Guincho
Alegranza!
Young Turks

This is one of those records where the cover artwork totally matches the music found inside. Pablo Diaz-Reixa, as El Guincho is otherwise known, is a Barcelona musician who brings vibrant rhythms and colourful textures to his music, shot through with a madcap partying streak. It’s a hugely uplifting record, reminiscent in places of early Basement Jaxx (think a Spanish take on ‘Samba Magic’) and is often a barely contained expression of joy. The swaying rhythms of ‘Antillas’ are especially good, showing that El Guincho isn’t afraid to cast his net far and wide in search of influences. Calypso and Latin are just two styles that make themselves briefly known, on a record that finds its own distinctive voice while having a blast.
