Motor City Soul
Technique
Simple Records

‘Technique’ is a brave title to give a record, given New Order’s album of the same name. Motor City Soul’s album, though, is rather different – it shares the same warm temperatures but little else. This is deep house, quite laid back and chilled but with an underlying tension even in the longer tracks that keeps it vital. There’s a generous dash of soul, too, found particularly in the drawn out ‘Change You’, an affecting vocal number featuring Ovasoul 7. The outfit function best when firing their beats up that bit more, and for that reason ‘Deliver Me’, ‘Kazan’ and the Kerri Chandler-esque ‘Movement & Motion’ are memorable, their harmonies given a bit of a twist. Being Simple Records, the quality threshold is high – and this is an album best experienced kicking back at home – or for some deeper escapism on the dancefloor.
