Mutations Volume 1.0
Mutate

In this uncertain climate it’s always heartening to report a new label, and Mutate Records looks as if it could be in for the long haul if their debut EP release is anything to go by. It’s a four parter, featuring tracks by different artists, and begins with ‘On Your Way’. Not the Helicopter classic, but something pretty riff-fuelled all the same from Momentum, which has a knowing glance at the ’80s as it works its chorus magic. Si Begg steps up with ‘Come Correct’, phat bass in tow, while Mad EP’s ‘Acid Jig’ – which started out as a piss take – quickly gains substance. Finally Unique 3’s ‘Song for Rohan’ is packed with organ riffs aplenty, though if you look a little closer you’ll get an idea of a deeper centre to the record – particularly when you discover it’s a memoriam in music. All things considered, Mutate are off to an extremely positive start – let’s hope 2009 brings them forward as a big player.
