Back To Mine with Lupe

Lupe is a monthly resident at Amsterdam’s globally-renowned Red Light Radio and also helms the Parish Gaynight parties at PiP Den Haag, an LGBT-friendly night that’s attracted guests of the calibre of San Proper, William Djoko and Sandrien.

From a DJ perspective, Lupe has played at practically every major Dutch venue and festivals, not least Trouw, Paradiso, Studio 80, 5DaysOff, Mysteryland, NOW&WOW, Dance Valley, ID&T’s Inner City, Shelter and even Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour after-party at Heineken Music Hall. Internationally, he has played at Exit Festival (Serbia), Dalston Superstore (London), Cookies (Berlin), The Hall (Istanbul) and many other venues. What’s more, he has also played alongside some of the scene’s foremost names, not least Erol Alkan, Tiga, Hercules & Love Affair, Steffi, DJ T, Shinedoe, Prosumer, Tama Sumo, San Proper, Miss Kittin, Honey Dijon, Booka Shade, DJ Haus and many more. An esteemed selector, he’s the perfect candidate for our Back 2 Mine series. Here’s what happened when we touched base with him recently…

Richenel – L’Esclave Endormi (4AD version)

The voice is like the human synthesizer that we’re born with. Vocals are sometimes underappreciated in house and techno. They are free to go to every genre, travel by way of remixing. I have developed a thing for jazzy vocals. I love remixing with vocals. I aim to let vocals play a part in my music productions. Back to mine… Most beautiful song ever imho. Richenel is from Amsterdam too. Would love to remix this for the dance floor!

Dorothy Ashby – Myself When Young

A harpist with a sublime singing voice too! This is both dance as well as chill-out and therefore psychedelic.

Larry Heard – Deja Vu (Musaria Mix)

Larry Heard’s way of working with vocals in house music has some of the best melodies, a good melody like this works in every genre and style.

Ennio Morricone – La Lucertola (Theme from A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin)

Singing without words: Edda Dell’Orso is that ultimate goddess. This psychedelic beauty of a soundtrack theme comes from another one of my favorite genres.

Secret Knowledge – Sugar Daddy (Original Mix)

Great jazzy intro and then beng – arpeggiated electro techno heaven, I love extra long, trippy tracks.

Beanfield – Tides (Carl Craig remix)

Yes Carl Craig thank you so much for this epic jazzy electro hybrid remix. Also check his remixes of Junior Boys and Siobhan Donaghy.

Chelonis R. Jones – Le Bauteau Ivre

Chelonis came to sing at my party in the 11 club; the pre-Trouw and pre-De School club. Wish he would release music again! The whole album is magnificent.

Nicolette – Single Minded People

I grew up on this, London music also feels like home to me being a half-Brit. Production sounds also so fresh-in-it’s-being-old-school.

Maurice Joshua – The Other Side/h3>
Don’t know who’s vocals they are, Maurice himself? They sure deliver. So good also with the 303.

Dinosaur – Kiss Me Again

Arthur Russell disco drama brilliance. If I had to keep only one of all my records it would be this.
