Noizu

Noizu made his mark with breakthrough debut ‘Lasers’ in 2017 on Chris Lake’s HOWSLA LP, which received endless support from a slew of house music’s leaders indlucing FISHER, Claude Von Stroke and Green Velvet. It was his release ‘Rave Alarm’, however, a collaborative single with Dombresky on his own imprint Techne which landed Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record’ on BBC Radio 1, that cemented the LA artist’s authority as a label head with undeniable production flair. DMCWORLD now dive in with the release of ‘Summer 91’ that comes with a new mix and vocals…his track that Noizu made in reponse to the pandemic…

Hey Noizu, thanks for your time today. Your recent single ’Summer 91′ is out now which was released on RCA. How are you feeling about the response?

The response has been amazing.  Firstly signing the song to RCA was a dream, I never thought I would have a record on a label like that.  The support on radio has also been so exciting.  People I have looked up to for a long time have supported this record, Annie Mac, Pete Tong etc.  I’m really happy with how people have reacted to it.

Does your creative process change every time you create a track?

I try to keep my releases varied as possible but still keep my sound.  I do things like use similar drum sounds and bass sounds in songs to keep the consistency but I think it’s important to keep pushing your sound forward.  It gets boring if you keep making the same song over and over again.

What was the production process like for this track? Were you able to get to the studio? Or do you have a home studio?

I made this at my home studio in LA.  I was trying to make something for the summer which had a nostalgic vibe as it was lockdown at the time.  I had the instrumental for a good month before we added the vocal.  We wrote some lyrics and tried about 3 ideas until we got to the final version.  It was quite a natural process and happened pretty quickly.

If you have a home studio – which do you prefer?

I’ve always had a home studio.  I have a second bedroom which I have made into a studio.  It’s pretty simple, MacBook Pro, a couple of Moog’s and a Juno 106.  I don’t even use soundproofing.  I like to be flexible and not rely on a massive studio to mix and master.

How has the last year impacted you?

It was definitely hard at first.  All my shows got cancelled and it was hard to write music for the first few months of lockdown.  By the time the summer came I actually got into a good flow of working and ‘Summer 91’ really took off which turned everything around.  I feel like me and my team made the most of the situation and my biggest song has actually come from lockdown so there is some good that has come from it all.

What positives have you taken from the current world situation?

I think it’s been nice to slow down a bit and get in the studio more.  Before Covid I was touring a lot and was away from home so it has been nice to spend time at home more.

Life after COVID, where will you go clubbing first?

I’m buzzing for festivals to come back.  EDC Vegas would be a good one!

If you could collab with any artist, who would that be and why?

I would love to collaborate with an older artist that has inspired me growing up.  Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy etc.  I think it would be really fun to mix the old and the new.

Is there anyone who inspires your sound?

I go through waves of what inspires me.  I’m always listening out for new sounds and older sounds to take influence from.  I don’t always stay focused on artists but more record labels.. Defected and FFRR have been my favorite this year.  There is so much good music out there at the moment it’s hard to keep up with it!

Favourite dance tracks of ALL time?

The Prodigy – Firestarter Boys Noize – Yeah Audio Bully’s – We Don’t Care Justice – Cross Album.

Are there any upcoming artists you want to shout out?

I’ve got some exciting tracks coming on my label ‘Techne’.  LP Giobbi has an amazing track coming out soon so keep an eye out for that!
