Back to Mine with Alex Over

Long-time collaborators Alex Over & Andrew Shobeiri launch Over’s brand new Perpetual Collective label with a pair of outstanding tracks. Alex Over has set up Perpetual Collective to have more control over his output and platform new talent. The label intends to be staunchly independent, have no fixed sound, and be a place for innovative, unconstrained music.

Over is a busy and experimental artist whose diverse musical output is characterised by real grit. He puts out free self-releases each month, runs The U-Turn podcast, and is an in-demand remixer. On top of this, he has picked up high-profile press for his various projects and shared stages with the likes of James Zabiela. Fellow Brightonian Andrew Shobeiri is a mysterious artist coming off the back of a significant collaboration with techno titan Rodhad. He releases as Rene Wise and has many styles in his arsenal.

This pair went to the same music college and immediately found common musical ground. After producing together for around seven years, they now plan to release their creations to the world. They were made on a range of hardware and software with found sounds, live instruments and bespoke sound banks. All of this lends their sounds a uniquely raw and distinctive character.

Opening the account is ‘Tides,’ a suspenseful electronic house track with loose, off-grid lead synths and rubbery kicks. It teases and pleases as it rolls on with distant eerie pads and plenty of great FX, adding texture and drama. A gorgeous synth breakdown resets the mood before the dubbed-out groove returns. ‘Compass’ is a perfectly stripped-back, rough-edged house cut in the style of STL. The rugged bass and scuffed-up kicks are softened by beautiful melodies that bring hope, optimism, and absorbing listening. Get set for a stunning Back To Mine 1o…

1) Simian Mobile Disco – Sleep Deprivation
Raw, live and at it’s time a new wave of Electronic Music with it’s modular goodness.
Simian Mobile Disco - Sleep Deprivation

2) Groove Armanda – Lightsonic
Freshness, with an unexpected vocal when first listening – brings back a lot of memories.
Groove Armada - Lightsonic

3) Michael Jackson – Human Nature
Had to put my hand into a hat and here we are. One of my favourite albums, on repeat.
Michael Jackson - Human Nature (Audio)

4) The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize
When you see this live, you’ll know what I mean.

5) N.W.A – Express Yourself
Those drums and lyrics. I say no more.
N.W.A. - Express Yourself (Official Music Video)

6) Burial – Archangel
Gritty, vocal snippets, and attention to detail was completely off the hook. Reminder me of something in a series for TV.
Burial - Archangel

7) Eminem – Till I Collapse
In my eyes, best album he has ever done and this song was in my top 3.

8) Mr. Oizo – Flat Beat
Apart from having an actual Flat Beat Eric replica in my flat, that baseline was pure madness. Remember having the single CD and buying it in Virgin Mega stores.
Mr Oizo - Flat beat (Official Video with Flat Eric - 1999 - F Communications)

9) Daft Punk – Revolution 909
Just an overall great track, it was quite refreshing when I first heard it and has always been in my music collection somewhere.
Daft Punk - Revolution 909 (Official Audio)

10) Aphex Twin – Heliosphan
This track taught me a lot about how things can make sense and not, and how un clean you can be when making music. I love the random elements in it, just works.
