Gui Boratto – Beautiful Life

Well, this song truly is special to me and many in the house/electronica world. I remember hearing this at an after party at one of my good pals’ houses back home on the Isle of Skye just over 15 years ago right before my 16th birthday. It had such an emotional connection with me, I just understood its message. This exact YouTube video as well haha with the car is also ingrained in my mind. So young with the world ahead of me, it made me feel good, hopeful, but also a little sad and scared for it to end. I guess all the best tracks do a bit of each to you if you’re listening to the right stuff.

Booka Shade – Love Inc

Booka, where do I start. These guys, alongside Gui, are artists that helped push me towards wanting to be a producer and a DJ. They have been so constant but also evolving just right and not slipping into anything other than what was true to their music. This track has all the elements to it that I need after a mad night out and it just makes me want to reminisce with my family and friends. Once the brass horns come in I just see parts of my life flying past – I almost get scared putting these tracks on sometimes because of the emotion. I am tied to them like some of life’s baggage haha. None the less, love is messy and I love these bloody tunes.

Bonobo – Flashlight

How did you first hear Bonobo? Well, I remember always hearing an abundance of wonderfully chosen samples pulled together like the actors cast for one of your favourite films. I play this tune out all the time when I DJ but also while I’m driving, or back at mine at the afters. It’s cool, its dark, its bright, its a lot of interesting colours on your mind, anyway enjoy it.

Reflekt – Need To Feel Loved (Adam K & Soha Remix)

Okay, is there even any need to introduce this? This tune is a cornerstone to anyones love in the electronic music world. With its part in the movie “It’s All Gone Pete Tong” being world renowned, it captures many peoples hearts & souls – that first Ibiza experience, love, loss, it had it all. I remember being young and having this on at the afters every time without fail. I was lucky enough to do an official remix of the original and had a few phone calls with Reflekt themselves who chose my remix out of a big bunch of remixes and it was later released. That was a full circle moment in my career. Alongside that, having a residency in Ibiza for 5 months, it felt like you were living that character’s life for a short period of time, soon to return home to Skye to sort my head out, haha.

Caribou – I Can’t Do Without You

Well this absolute hero (Caribou) has been a favourite of mine for sometime, he just doesn’t disappoint. You get tracks that will go down in history and I can guarantee you this tune will be remembered long after we are gone, that’s all we can hope for as artists. That’s the great thing about music, it’s perennial.

Sam Cooke – A Change Is Gonna Come

Sam was an unbelievably talented and complicated person who had music with a message. I think that’s it, making music for a reason and really meaning what you’re saying. One day I wish to make something with as little as 10% of that power and hold that this track has on our souls. Its empowering and uplifting at the same time, everyone can have a good sing to let life’s worries out.

Ben E King – Stand By Me

Just such a great and compelling piece of art this one, it gets me every time haha. A wee factoid here – the title is derived from, and was inspired by, a spiritual song written by Sam Cooke and JW Alexander called ‘Stand by Me Father’ which is also a wonderful track.

Aretha Franklin – You Send Me

Aretha is the queen of all music in my mind. Me and my late mother were just obsessed with her, vinyls flying all over, CDs in the wrong cases (still doing this, sorry), the whole works kicking about. Soul was my childhood and her life – now as she goes, the love of soul lives on through me like so many others. Soul music to me is really where music breathes its truest form. Life is short and complicated, and music sees us through the shit.

Gladys Knight & The Pips – Midnight Train To Georgia

“A Superstar, But He Didn’t Get Far” “I’d rather live in his world, than live without him, in, mine”. It’s honestly just like, lyrics and the way it’s sung, it just doesn’t come together so smoothly now as it used to. So gracefully talented, you just can’t beat the classics can you.

The Spinners – I’ll Be Around

If you don’t really know my music taste by now, this will probably see you there. I’m a really emotional bastard to be honest and music is usually a release of emotions trying to escape so I guess I’m in the right career haha.

I’ll leave you on this, I’ve just finished the writing phase of my second album with the first album still due out, so I’ll Be Around, and I’ll hopefully see you there when it all goes down ;).
