Boris Werner

The man from the Dam rolls up his sleeves for Halloween in London

Interview : Dan Prince

Hey Boris welcome to DMCWORLD! Another wet week in Amsterdam but that doesn’t matter as it has been ADE week – what have been some of the highlights for you?

“Hey Dan, thanks for having me. Well, the weather this year was actually better then the years before! All my shows were good fun! Played for Get Physical and One Records/Visionquest, but must say that my highlights were definitely the Pop Up party with Robert Dietz. He found a cool little Korean restaurant where he invited Onno and me to come over and play. The DJ booth was placed in the kitchen where we cooked up some dope beats. The vibe was amazing and really intimate! Second was Trouw on Sunday where me and my buddies Makam, Tom Trago, William Kouam Djoko destroyed the basement till 7am…this years ADE was really great!”

What have been some of the big tunes of week?

DJ Deeon – So High

Armando – Don’t Take It (Thomos Edit)

Rahaan – Disco Fantasy

We interviewed your Late Night Society partner William Kouam Djoko at the start of the summer before his own Ibiza craziness began. Who from your long list of likeminded guest DJs that you have put on have really got your ‘Dress Up Chic. Act Like Trash’ mentality? Who has been the craziest?

“Wow, tough question. I guess every time there were some moments of craziness! The one with Jeff K for sure and the Jamie Jones & Robert James night. We invited the Hot Creations label and if you brought a big plant with you, you would get free entry. Some people were so smart to smuggle some things in it. The place was packed and Jamie was killing it.”

What are the next plans for the club night?

“We have some new plans coming up but that’s still for us to know and for the rest to guess.”

Well the big news for us Brits is your final UK appearance of 2013, hitting up the ‘Another Party’ Halloween Special at Pulse in London alongside A Guy Called Gerald, Tevo Howard and Portable/Bodycode. London is really on the up at the moment, loads of great parties. And London loves you right?

“Hahaha, it’s mutual so I freak’n hope so Every time I’ve been there I’ve had a blast, such a vibrant city…”

Who are you looking forward to checking out on November 1st?

“I have records from all three of them and have never heard any of them play so for me it’s an amazing line up. Can’t wait to see them play!!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Armando – Don’t Take It (Thomos Edit) – BBE

Rahaan – Disco Fantasy (Edit) – Lumberjack In Hell

The Habibeats – Rum – Versatile Records

DJ Gilb’R & Dj Sotofett – Foliage (808 Mix) – Versatile Records

Shonky – White Ghost – Apollonia

Acid Kid – Make It Funky (Vocal Mix) – DAP

Catz Eats Dogz – Where House – Pets Recordings

DJ Deeon – So High – Dance Mania

Jovonn – I Can’t Make Up My Mind – Clone Classic

M+M – M&M Theme – BBE

You have been one of DC10’s residents for a few years now. For our readers who haven’t yet made it to this magical club, can you sum up in one sentence what makes Circoloco such an incredible party…

“The club has this indoctrinating, energetic, chaotic, sweaty, overwhelming atmosphere and after 4 seasons, it feels like home to me…”

What are your thoughts on Ibiza 2013 – everywhere seems to have had a really good year?

“Everyone around me had a great year. They were some big changes just like every year but in the end the island always brings out the best in one another…”

Away from Ibiza, where are some of your favourite clubs you love?

“Club Trouw and Studio 80 in Amsterdam, both are really special to me. The Berghain in Berlin is always a trip.. Furthermore Ouput/Panther Room in NYC is a really nice club in the middle of Brooklyn.”

We had the DMC crew over in the States in May and they were lucky enough to see you spin in Detroit. I believe this was your first time there – what was that experience like?

“It was quite overwhelming to actually see in what state the city is in at the moment. But after meeting a lot of people I’m quite convinced that the city will get back on its feet, although it might take some years. The Circo Loco party at the TV Lounge was off the hook, what an energetic crowd! Too bad I had to leave straight after.”

You have just returned from a US Tour – how do you think the American scene is developing over there – they seem to be opening their minds to different music at last

“If you think about it, it’s kinda strange that there was/is such a great gap between Europe and the US, considering it all started in NY. But it’s good to see there’s a new era coming up. The scene is overall quite small but I see already a difference between now and 4 years ago. Also for me it feels like starting over again, breaking down new soil. It’s a challenge for me. I see a big shift coming up, the US is finally ready again for some proper music, haha!”

We interviewed Steve Mac last week and he said something kinda interesting…“It was different when I started out back in the day, there was no glamour side of travelling around the world, getting paid fortunes for gigs, it was all about the music. I think people get into it for all the wrong reasons today.” What are your thoughts on that?

“When I started going out in ’97 this was just the beginning I guess, in my childhood every childwanted to play the guitar or the drums. Nowadays every kid wants to be a DJ, that says a lot about how people view the whole DJ thing. It also has to do with the fact that almost every R&B/pop singer makes tracks nowadays with a house beat underneath it. I guess there are some people doing this for all the wrong reasons, but in my direct surroundings it’s all about the love for the music, otherwise we would play music like what’s his name, Steve Aoki.”

What was the first piece of vinyl you ever bought?

“Ian Pooley – Relations on Definitive Records.”

As the music industry has become more and more digitalized over the years, there seems to have also been a recent resurgence in vinyl sales and culture. Why do you think this is the case?

“I think it’s because of the value of vinyl. When you buy a digital track online the only thing you have is a file on your computer while if you buy a record you actually have something in your hands. Also the artwork says a lot about the artist/label, it’s a way to express yourself. I’m really happy this is happening because some years ago we lost a major part of our record shops in Amsterdam, and maybe this way we can regain this in the next couple of years. Luckily record shops like Rush Hour will always be there.”

And finally, how is the new studio coming along, when we can expect some new material?

“Slowly but steadily, just finished some tracks that will definitely be coming out soon…”

Thanks dude. Appreciate your time.

“Always a pleasure!”
