Berlin Berlin

Egg Ldn featuring the wild Joanna Glitz and Cynth Icorn

Joanna Glitz

Hey JoJo welcome to DMCWORLD. Let’s kick off by asking you where you hail from?

I’m from Cascais in Portugal and I have been in London for just over 10 years.

What has been your best ever club experience?

Dancing around at Candy in Stockholm after performing at Stockholm Pride. The atmosphere and the people were absolutely amazing and me and my friends arrived in full rubber ensembles after the show. I’ve not had that much fun in years.

How will you incorporate the Berlin style into your performance at the BB party at Egg Ldn?

I’m taking inspiration from the film Cabaret to create my costumes and performance for the evening. Also touching a bit on the alternative subculture of Berlin.

Do you identity with the Berlin Tanzbar scene of the 20s or do you prefer the performance scene of 2016?

I consider myself a blend of many different styles – hard to pigeon hole, but fabulous to behold. I am re-launching my career and I think the performance scene of 2016 will offer a more varied source of inspiration. So I probably identify more with what 2016 has to offer.

Where do you get your ideas for your shows from?

Drag queens, classic films and images, 80’s and 90′ London gay’ lost scene and my Drag Mama. Surprisingly, Brazilian soap operas can also be an amazing source of visual inspiration and I grew up watching them in Portugal. The same goes for anime and I have always taken a lot of inspiration from series like Sailor Moon and Saber Marionette – their costumes and the proportions always amazed me. Also certain RPG games have the most amazing avatars too so I use them a lot for research (and fun!).

Do you have any inspirations or performers, artists, etc. that influenced when you first started and also who influence you now?

Carmen Miranda, Liza Minnelli, Transformer, Valeria Valença (the Brazilian Carnival poster queen from a few years back).

For people that have never seen your performance, what can they expect on the night?

Glitter, Glamour and Grandeur, the 3G’s! Movement fluidity and sensuality, a feast for the eyes!

Cynth Icorn

Cynth a huge welcome to DMCWORLD. Where are you from originally?

I’m from the South Coast originally but I have lived in London for 6 years.

What’s your favourite memory or experience of Berlin?

Performing my hook suspension with Mad Alan at the Kit Kat club was pretty special as is the German fetish ball each year and of course, Berghain.

Your favourite ever club experience?

This is a very hard question. Clubs have given me so much…a creative space, a platform, a community and they are my lifeblood in many ways. I have special memories of performing, running my first clubs and my first clubbing memories which are all very special in their own ways.

How will you incorporate the Berlin style into your performance at the BB party at Egg Ldn?

Berlin to me is about harnessing that underground energy and using it to create art for cabaret and just keep your eyes open on the 16th to see what I will invoke from the shadows.

Do you identity with the Berlin Tanzbar scene of the 20s or do you prefer the performance scene of 2016?

Both scenes are incredibly important but my practice couldn’t exist without the wealth of history behind it. Being where I am in time means I have been informed by so many incredible artists coming before and this melting pot of 2016 brings Cynth Icorn to you.

Where do you get your ideas for your shows from?

I blend together queer aesthetics and fine art. My performances are shaped by my politics, my personality and my perversions.

Do you have any inspirations or performers, artists, etc. that influenced when you first started and also who influence you now?

Art is about reflecting and warping what you see around you. Every act you see will be stored away and will influence how your work is shaped in someway. I adore Leigh Bowery’s work, Actionism, the Occult, Rebecca Horn, Ray Ceasar and so so many more.

For people that have never seen your performance, what can they expect on the night?

A demonic Semana Santa possesion, a pentential performance to exorcise my perversions.

JoJo Glitz and Cynth Icorn perform alongside Marnie Scarlet, Beatrix Carlotta and Akimbo Moonchild at Berlin Berlin on Saturday January 16th at Egg Ldn. Music includes a Chalet Club showcase featuring Mark Henning, Frag Maddin & Yannick Robyns; Save Us Records Cosmic Cowboys, Kris Davis & Andrea Ljekaj and Sisyphos’ Jonty Skrufff, Fidelity Kastrow and Juli.N More.
