Bobby Rock

New Life – same reactions on the dancefloors! Massive new tune from the Dutch superstars

Interview : Dan Prince

Welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

We are on top of the world with the amazing feedbacks we are getting on ‘New Life’. But if you mean literally we are at home in the Netherlands.”

Before we kick on with the music, gotta ask…are Holland going to beat Argentina and go on to win the World Cup???

Haha! Please do ask! We never expected our Lions to perform as well as they are doing at the moment with all those new young players. We’ve got a couple of great strikers like Van Persie, Robben and Sneijder, but the best of the players have very little experience playing on a World Cup level. Lots of respect for Louis van Gaal so far for doing what the hell it is he does! If we can prevent Messi from showing his skills, I think we can beat Argentina, and once we’re in the final anything can happen!”

Well you have done it again, sent the planet’s dancefloors CRAZY thanks to your music. This time it’s around ‘New Life’ causing the major damage, please talk us through the history and sound of the track…

We were asked to make an anthem for this amazing festival in The Netherlands. Of course we took this opportunity straight away and hit the studio. The mission: to create this big gathering feeling of happiness and live your life now!! When we got stuck we combined two old projects of ours in to one. But then the hardest part was yet to come! We had to find the right vocals to express what we wanted the crowd to feel. When we got the vocals back from Cimo Frankel, we were super excited! His sound was exactly what we were looking for. We managed to give 2 of our old tracks a new life and the lyrics just expressed what we think you should aim for…live now and party like it’s your last day!!”

When I told Guy Garret in the Buzz Chart throne room I was interviewing you today he shouted…”we love Bobby Rock!! It’s such an uplifting track with passion that captures a spirit and NRG I haven’t seen since SHM split up!” – thoughts on that little comment?

“We think Guy has a great taste for good music haha! No but seriously, we’re glad with all the great comments but this is a great compliment of course as we’re big fans of the SHM.”

The new tune has been supported by every major talent in the world. When you release a new record, whose are the producers you always check to see if they like your music?

Actually we’re not sending out our tracks when they are done to other artists. When we produce a track, we aim for a label and send it to this label exclusively. But of course we compare our tracks in the studio. Mostly tunes by Nicky Romero and Axwell, both are great in mixing, compression and clearness. So if our tracks are as balanced as their tracks then we send it out!! And wait for a positive feedback from the label.”

You hail from Spijkenisse in the western Netherlands, the same town as such notable artists as Afrojack and Vato Gonzalez…any of you guys friends growing up?

“Actually we all went to  the same high school, but in a different year – and Nick and I lived in the same street. So we knew each other but weren’t friends at that time. A few years later I crossed paths again with Nick and he showed me some things when I told him I wanted to become a DJ. Vato and I see each other a lot at festivals/parties and of course the three of us have a special connection because we are ‘Spikecity homies’.”

Not many people know this, but Bobby Rock is really good at…

I like to shoot some hoops! When I was a kid my dream was to play in the NBA one day, but of course when you grow older you find out that’s a mission impossible for a Dutch guy. I ended up in the youth national team of Holland and played on the highest level for many years. I still play some games every now and then! So next to music, I love sports!!”

“ Tomorrowland! What an amazing festival is this. So impressive how much time is spend on every little detail. Would be a dream to perform at this festival one day!”

What is on a Bobby Rock rider in 2014?

“We are easy going! Like all others, we just want things to be arranged perfect. So no real crazy things on there, but of course we can come up with a list easily…”

Who are your big DJ mates you love bumping into at gigs and having a few beers with – who is the craziest?

“Lately we’ve been bumping in to the Mighty Fools quite a lot. They are real fools actually….like us! Haha! Vato & Tjen are also quite a lot of fun. We Dutchies just know how to party!”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

The Radetzky March. My mother always played this song when I was with her in our car and told me to close my eyes and imagine you could hear the horses running on the beach. A bit crazy right?”

 …always get you dancing?

D*Note – ‘Shed My Skin’! When I hear this track I immediately can see the video clip in my mind. I love the sunset at the Sa Trinxa in Ibiza… what a magical place!!”

…reminds you of being broken hearted?

Kenneth Head – ‘On The Road Again’.. This was the song I had with my ex-girlfriend.”

…you wish you would have made?

Avicii – ‘Levels’. Even if you don’t like EDM Music, you gotta love this track. It’s just so amazing what an impact this track had in the clubs and festivals and even on the mainstream radio. Everyone became happy after listening to this track.”

Who is the best new DJ/producer you have seen recently?

“Maddix! We met each other a couple of years ago and been friends ever since. He’s s really great producer which we are sure you’ll hear a lot of  in the future!”

Tell us about your studio set up…

“Back in the days we had a lot of hardware, nowadays we only sometimes still use the Virus. But mostly we use virtual plug ins now. There are a so many good plug ins, our favorite is the Sylenth for making sounds. For our compression we mostly use soft tube. But it various constantly as every track has a different feel and approach.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“At the moment we are remixing Sultan & Ned Sheppard ft. The Boxer Rebellion which will be soon out on Protocol…and of course we are working on a great follow up with Cimo Franke…Dan and everyone at DMCWORLD…super thanks for the kind words about ‘New Life’, much appreciated by all of us…”
