DJ W!LD

‘When You Feel Me’ – massive new album from the producer on a roll

Interview by Rob Chadwick

Welcome to DMCWORLD man. How has 2014 been for you so far?

Really good thanks Rob. Very busy with gigs, but also happy to have finally got my new album out, a double disc delight of new W!LD tracks called ‘When You Feel Me!’ One part sexy house; the other part darker, with more techno elements, but both around 118bpm.”

Who were your early influences that got you into house music specifically?

“I will say Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, Kerri Chandler, DJ Sneak, DJ Duke, Romanthony, KOT and DJ Q. The list is long.”

Do you like summer in terms of the gigs you play. Do you prefer outdoors and terrace parties or are you more a club man?

“I like to play, full stop. Every situation works for me as it allows me to play a broad spectrum of tracks depending on the country, the weather etc.”

What’s it like having been resident at DC10? Did you play differently there than anywhere else?

“It’s a great honour to play there and to have held down a residency for over 4 years. I play slightly differently there than anywhere else, not only because of the vibe and the atmosphere, but also because set times tend to be shorter. From the first record you play down to the last beat the people support you into a new high. They create this magic that makes it impossible for any DJ to play bad. You’re being pushed to give it your very best, always.”

When you produce do you have the dancefloor at places like DC10 in mind?

“Yes yes yes! Absolutely. It has affected my life, and my music, so much! I get to hear so many different styles of electronic music, and meet so many new artists. For me it’s about the music though, always. I’ve been playing regularly at DC10 for 5 years now. I would definitely say it’s the best, and most outrageous party in Ibiza! I feel really at home in the club, so it’s easy for me to slip into a rhythm and feel comfortable with the crowd and my surroundings.”

You used to play big fashion and commercial events right? Do you ever miss that scene?

“As a kid I wanted to be a designer and I had a lot of respect for the work of the great stylists. However, this is a double edged sword; I like the artistic and creative side of the fashion world, but I distance myself from all the hype that lingers around. When I was playing at fashion shows I never compromised on what I thought was good music – but it definitely taught me how to adapt and create a special atmosphere that was far removed from the dancefloor. I made a lot of tunes for these shows, and that is what producing music is so great, there are no limits.”

What’s the difference between your two labels, W and Catwash?

Catwash Records was born with Chris Carrier. We used to make music together as Catwash – the project actually existed before the label. Catwash is a label that releases many different styles of electronic music, and is also a big family, and provides a platform for new artists to break through (there are of course some more established artists on the roster as well). I play a lot of Catwash tracks in my sets. W is a label just for my tracks, and my remixes.”

How hard is it running a label nowadays when everyone does. Do you try and stand out in any way…and if so, how?

“It’s tough, no question. But with the genre we specialize in, we all do this more for the love of vinyl and music, than for success and money. I try to standout and be myself and will keep trying!”

What are 10 tracks you are playing at the moment?

You play at EGG in London soon. How do you like playing in the UK, are crowds different than anywhere else?

“I love playing in the UK, very open minded dancefloor, a long culture and affinity with music and partying. And girls are really flirty and everyone is super drunk…what more could you ask for?”

And what should people expect from you at EGG?

“It’s hard to say now, depends on the mood of the crowd, and mine…all I can say is it will be 100% w!ld…”

What else have you got coming up musically?

“2015 will hopefully be a great year. With my new album out and more projects in design confirmed, as well as some releases, remix packages, and surprising and amazing gigs, I am already looking forward to it!”

If you could play one record no other DJ was allowed to, what would it be and why?

“Once I finish my own tracks, I like to hold on to them for a bit so I can test them out exclusively…but once I have released them, no track at all. Music is made to share!

What do you enjoy doing when your not producing or touring?

“Painting, sports (basketball, tennis, running), cooking, sex, smoking big joints.”

Finally, how do you live up to you name? Tell us a W!LD story…

“Hard to pick one thing…I try to live up to my name every single day! I could pick the time me and a girl got up to some naughty things whilst I was DJing to 2000 people…or perhaps playing in the middle of the Amazon having taken a healthy dose of the local hallucinogen…the list could go on but I don’t think it would be cool to tell you everything!”
