Doorly welcome back to DMCWORLD dude, where in the world are you right now?

“Ibiza Dan! Getting ready for a big weekend of gigs here and in Croatia for Hideout Festival!”

A brand new Doorly Toolroom Knights compilation has just been released…over 30 superb rolling House and deep grooves. The album has a real live feel…?

“Yep that was a real aim for us to try to get me across as a live DJ as well as a producer. I also try to make my tracks feel as live as possible as well, it’s all about the vibe!”

How influenced was the track selection down to what you thought the vibe of Ibiza 2014 was going to be…?

“I mixed it in early May before the season had begun, but obviously I was trying to pick tracks that I thought would do well this summer.”

What were the first 3 tracks you put down on the Toolroom team sheet?

“Marquis Hawkes – Get Your Ass Off My Grass’.

– Been one of my faves in my sets for ages now, goes off!.

Doorly & Sonny Fodera – For Me.

– My new one with Sonny and the lead exclusive track for the album.

Krystal Klear – Squad

– Just love the layers in this song and it’s one of those tracks I wish I’d made.”

DMC are of course the company behind the World DJ Championships, the competition that has given us the likes of A-Trak, Craze, C2C and The Scratch Perverts. You are well voiced as a lover of turntablism, how much of an eye have you kept on these worldwide battles over the years?

“Yeah of course I’m always keeping my eye on the scene, these guys are like witches and it just keeps getting better and better. I’ve gone onto become good friends with some of the greats along the way as our musical careers have aligned – A-Trak, Plus One (now in Jack Beats), of course the Scratch Perverts and Craze.  I actually taught myself to scratch watching Q Bert tutorial videos as well. I haven’t actually watched all of the DMC Finals stuff from 2013 so thanks for the reminder! That’s tonight’s entertainment sorted Dan!”

“Fatboy Slim is my hero, he is the reason I DJ like I do”.  Discuss…

“Just his fun approach to DJing being more than just mixing 2 records together. He was one of the first DJs I ever saw using accapella’s, tongue in cheek samples and scratches in his set and that was hugely inspiring for me and the whole reason I also decided to think outside the box when DJing live. He’s now a good friend and continues to inspire me as a human being.”

You revel in the diversity of your warm up sets you perform at Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks, you actually enjoy have a good think about the superstar live band following you and adjusting your sets. Please give us some examples of the different types of sets you do for various artists…

“Over the last 8 years with Ibiza Rocks especially I think I’ve been given the warm up / changeover or closing set for pretty much any musical vibe you can throw at me! Things like playing with the Specials & Madness and that kind of Ska stuff I realised that their crowd can get right in to drum and bass as it totally fits their dance moves especially paired with reggae vocals. Playing with bands like Chic is a dream as I get to just play Disco! I once did the changeover set in a football stadium in Poland where I came on after Lauren Hill and had 45 mins on stage to go into the Prodigy! So obviously I started with Soul n’ Hip Hop through and gradually worked my way through to where at the end of my set it was basically 90s rave! That was big fun!”

You were the one who gave Ibiza Rocks supremo Andy McKay the idea of the live bands being introduced on stage and to also put on a DJ who knows how to warm up rather than try and make a name for themselves. He told you it was a great idea and asked you to stay for the summer. Was that all part of your plan?!?

“No not really, I just went there and did what I thought should be done before a band goes on stage with an Ibiza crowd in front of me, using my judgement as a promoter and fairly well versed DJ and it just worked out.”

You have a night off in Ibiza. What club and DJ do you go and check out?

“If I’m letting my hair down I love DC10 on Wednesdays for Paradise, the whole experience with the music and visuals is incredible and it’s a mainly English crowd so very comfortable and familiar in that it doesnt take itself too seriously. The line ups in there are just exactly up my street with the likes of Cajmere, Joy Orbison etc on the line ups alongside Jamie Jones and the gang of course.”

Whenever I drive past the restaurant Relish in San Antonio I chuckle as I recall you telling Rob Da Bank on Radio 1 how it was the perfect hangover eaterie on the island. So, what is your favourite post club plate of nosh from that gaff to help you on the road to recovery????

“They actually have an unofficial “Doorly Burger” on the menu! It’s a goats cheese burger and it’s so named because it’s big, fat and cheesy just like me! But seriously, the sausage and mash and the Sunday dinner there are exactly what you need after a good two day bender on no food!”

In an interview in 2012 you claimed that Ibiza is predominately a house music island. Would you stick with that statement in 2014

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

“No not at all, I like to think we played a big part in changing things on the Island that year with Ibiza Rocks and reclaim the dancefloor, we brought the first Drum & Bass & Dubstep DJs to the island that year for example and continued to bring the only live none electronic bands as well. These days although House Music is leading the way once again there’s a lot of people people are doing big live gigs now on the island and obviously the likes of chase & status & rudimental are big headliner on island now!”

Rumours abound that you may be away all year in 2015…what’s the sketch there?

“I’m always away somewhere or another! I spend a total of around two months a year at my home in L.A, I’d love to somehow change that next year and spend a little more time there as it’s where I’m happiest and most productive, but its unlikely and I’m not complaining at all, life is good and I never have time to get bored of anywhere because I’m not there long enough.”

Best live artist you have ever seen?

“Daft Punk.”

The record that…

Reminds you of your childhood?

“A Beach Boys album as my dad used to play it on holiday car trips.”

Reminds you of being brokenhearted?

“It breaks my heart every time I hear that awful #Selfie song on the radio!”

You wish you would have made?

“Todd Terje – Inspector Norse.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“I’m living the dream right now and working with loads of my heroes, this week alone I’m working on collaborations with Cajmere, DJ Pierre, Switch and Harry Choo Choo Romero!”
