A stunning start to 2014 continues for Maurizio Colella with ‘Cool You Off’

Interview : Dan Prince

Maurizio welcome to DMCWORLD, where on planet earth are you today?

“Unbelievable but I am home in my town Zurich and this is very exciting to me after a busy Miami week. Can’t wait to hit the studio and catch up with my family.”

Dude, what a start to 2014. ‘Reckless Ardor’, your Miami Sunset remix of Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’, the EDX Fe5tival Remix of Christina Perri’s ‘Human’ and your Calvin Harris rework of ‘Thinking About You’ all creating havoc on dancefloor’s around the world. We hear on the grapevine there is a follow up to ‘Reckless Ardor’ coming out soon?

“There is in fact a lot of new music in work and I can’t be more than super happy about this year’s start. The new single releasing this April is called ‘Cool You Off’ and will be on Enormous Tunes. It’s a straight follow up to my Reckless Ardor record which is still in full release progress and growing day per day. I tried to evolve a little since then and I believe I did pretty well. It’s deep and warm and it will cool you off.”

You had a classical education at school but never really followed it up, you preferred sports back then. What was the dream for you all those years ago…to become a Pirmin Zurbriggen, Hans Gerschwiler, Hugo Koblet…a future Roger Federer?

“Always Alberto Tomba never Pirmin, just kidding.. my dream way always to become a Diego Armand Maradona. In reality I was super scorer, but this is now over 20 years away…I am happy the music and generation of the 90ties took my heart and makes me feel still same for the music after more than 2 decades.”

When did you first start to become aware of music, who were the artists you were first enjoying?

“I would say over 25 years ago. My first LP was: Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy and maybe before as well more HopHouse stuff.”

You provided a wonderful experience for one of your fans last year through social media, a trip on a private jet to the NoXcuses party at Street Parade in Zurich and then off to Ibiza where you were opening for Avicii. So…how was it, what did the winner think of it all?

“I am sure he had a big blast and it was fun times for me and my entourage as well. Definitely want to do something similar again this year.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

I don’t have a top10 on spinning, I try to play out of scratch and read the crowd. Here is my April Top10 in general:

1. EDX – Cool You Off [Sirup]

2. John Martin – Anywhere For You (Carli Remix) [IDJ]

3. Calippo – Back There (EDX Remix) [Enormous]

4. Klingade – Juble (Nora En Pure Remix) [WEA]

5. Christina Perri – Human (EDX Remix) [Atlantic]

6. Booka Shade – Crossing Borders feat. Fritz Kalkbrenner (Pleasurekraft Remix) [Promo]

7. EDX – Reckless Ardor [Sirup]

8. Nora En Pure – You Are My Pride (Croatia Squad Remix) [Sirup]

9. Luigi Rocca feat. IAMAlina – She (Tim Cullen Remix) [202lovers]

10. Croatia Squad – Pop Your Pu**y [Enormous]

You have remixed some mighty superstars, the likes of deadmau5, Axwell and Bob Sinclar have all received the EDX midas touch. What is your approach when deciding whether to take a track on or not to remix?

“Can I evolve or work with the chords, do the vocal touch myself and can I make it sound bigger?”

So we come round to your place on a lazy, summery Sunday afternoon. Who are some of the artists you are spinning to mellow the vibe…?

“There is no lazy summer Sundays. I like Nora En Pure, she is incredibly talented though.”

I loved a question you were asked in an interview a little while ago when the guy asked you what would you say if you could write yourself a letter and deliver it to you three years ago? You said “get a hair cut”. Was it that bad back then???

“Nope, but been always on the road and 24/7 busy can make it sometime hard to find time to get a swaggy cut!

What else studio wise is swinging our way soon?

“Lot’s of new remixes and originals before the summer. You will be feeling always that good vibe which in the summer will turn somehow a  little more summerish. No more classic EDM noisy drops for now.”

It’s your birthday. Who are the 3 DJs you ask to come and play and what 1 singer dead or alive do you ask to come and sing you Happy Birthday?

“Carl Cox (Classic Set), Cedric Zeyenne, Annie Mac (she is so sweet). Barry White as a singer. Surprised?”

What was the last GREAT club you rocked?

“Pacha Florianopolis and a few others.”

Not many people know this, but Maurizio Colella is really good at…

I cook like a chef.”

So Napoli flying high in Serie A, do you think you will ever get on terms  with Juventus?

“Napoli play with the heart, Juve play with the referee. Hard to be able to beat on a full season. Last weekends game we won against Juve was beautiful.”

And finally, what is the last song you heard today?

“Mike Candys – Carnaval, I’ve watched into the new music clip to it. The one before on my speakers was, Crossing Borders feat. Fritz Kalkbrenner (Pleasurekraft Remix) by Booka Shade.”
