Jack Eye Jones

‘Story’ – the latest in a line of bombastic productions from Scotland’s finest

Interview by Dan Prince

Mr Jones – welcome back to DMCWORLD…need I ask, where in the world are you right now?

Hey guys, I’m in my new house in Ibiza, I came over to have meetings for my summer dates here, I believe in being pretty hands on when it comes to bookings, especially here in Ibiza, it has to be right, rather than just a booking, something special about this place keeps bringing me back, hoping to tie in my Ibiza Sessions brand with a venue that I loved playing last year when I was doing the pre parties for Size. It’s all down to dates if it works for both of us, but it will definitely see me doing some 2-3 hour sets which is great. I’m also going to be doing some sunsets down at Savannah on the Sunset strip which I love.

The first piece of music you heard this morning when you rolled out of bed?

I know the answer to this, as whenever I hear a great track I shazam it so it stays in my tags, and I’ll get it later when back at home. So the first shazam of today was ‘Long Story’ by Maniezz.

A stunning new release from you causing carnage on the dancefloor, please talk us through the sound and history of ‘Story’…

Story yeah, it just came out last week! It was more of a deep house track earlier on and I wanted to experiment with a more of a crunchy future house sound as I have been playing that a lot in my sets. I wanted to give this to a few people to see how they took it, so I’m delighted that my good friend Jon Mancini has got back in to production and partnered up with the up and coming Keonovic and created a cracking remix for it. I also met up with Jamie Antonelli in Brooklyn and he gave it a kinda tech twist, I had also been pestering Laidback Luke for ages who I admire so much, must have sent him the track loads of times, and he made a couple of takes of it, I loved them all, so a big thanks to everyone in this team of remixers, love you.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

I’m flying back from Ibiza to play this charity gig called C IN THE PARK, I flew back from Ibiza before for this 2 years ago, they expected 500 people and there was 6 or 7 thousand so I’m pretty excited to drop some tracks this weekend, especially with DJCME. She’s 10 and has this cool taste in tropical house music and she is on the stage before me,.. https://www.facebook.com/djcmeofficial

I’m in love with the voice of Kat Nestel so I’ll definitely play Angels. Martin Garrix’s new track Don’t Look Down with Usher is class, I love it so that’s in the bag too. I’ll also drop my new record House Track, which I made with Alabama 3 as well as my another of my upcoming releases Reaching Out,. Finally I might round things off with a track in progress called Summer Nights which has a local singer from Glasgow Toni Etherson, Such a summer tune.

The best and worst thing about living in Los Angeles?

In And Out Burger is the best and worst thing about Los Angeles, MMMM / BAD BOY!

And the obvious question – what do you miss and not miss about life in Ibiza?

The pace of life and service in some places is shocking, I went to IKEA yesterday to get some cutlery for the new house – 5 days to get them, sums up how slow the life can be here. On the other hand it does make you slow down and appreciate what’s going on around you while you wait for your cutlery to eat your dinner…

An up and coming producer to watch out for in 2015…

Curbi 100%

What do you make of the whole Arches shutdown in Glasgow, a simply legendary place that has brought so much happiness to so many over the years…

I read an interesting article about how the venue was being bullied by police Scotland, they have been getting a hard time for a while at the time of writing this over 35,000 people have signed a petition to have the late licence re instated, from my personal experience as a clubber and performer, it’s the safest venue I have ever been in, so please add your name to this.

You recently kicked off your summer gigs at LIFE in Sin City alongside Michael Woods. How musically educated are the clubbers in Vegas in 2015?

It’s pretty crazy which fits me well, It’s like everyone is on a stag or hen party, I can definitely see some more underground elements creeping in, there’s more groove in the music. A change is already beginning to happen!

Thoughts on Seth Troxler’s comment at IMS Engage a few weeks back…

“I’m seeing people float further and further away from the idea and the culture that we tried to create, and it really pisses me off.”

I think Seth just needs a big hug!

It’s your birthday. You are throwing a mutha of a party. 5 artists or DJs you invite to throw it down…

I am doing this and it’s in Ibiza on August 13th! I’m even doing a competition to fly people over anywhere in the world to my party, details on my website, http://www.jackeyejones.com and I have been inundated with DJs wanting to play at it, so here’s my list, and it’s not getting added to…

Junior Sanchez, Jon Mancini, Rosko, Mike Hertz and there’s no party without myself…

Some big summer shows you are really looking forward to…

Savannah in Ibiza 100%

Loving your new studio in LA…what’s the best toy in there?

The coffee machine…

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise…

Summer Nights with Toni, needs finishing off, so back at the beginning of July to get that finished, Summer’s here…
