La Fleur

Our favourite Watergate resident telling us it’s time to Make A Move

Interview by Rob Chadwick

It is sadly not of often that a woman of the influence of La Fleur breaks through to the big time. The Swedish born DJ and producer has really blossomed in recent years though all because of her unique and club ready sound, which has found favour with top DJs and dancers all over the world. Now based in Berlin and a key resident DJ at top club Watergate, La Fleur also relates original and remixes on the in house label and they have become some of the most played on site slick RA. She has a new EP out now having also mixed a compilation for the label before now – and so we sat down to chat to the talent who also manages the Power Plant label about relationships, influence and more…

Do you think the art of the DJ is getting lost with shorter DJ sets, sync buttons, CDJs etc?

No, I think the art of DJing can still be shown under these circumstances. For me DJing is more than only technical skills, a big part is also track selection and reading a dancefloor.

You have been a resident in a few places – how does a resident DJ set differ to a headliners DJ set?

The DJ set might not differ just because you’re a resident dj or a headliner but as a resident DJ you get to know the club, the sound system, the crowd, it feels like your playground, your living room. As a headliner this can all be new to you, and it might take you a few tracks to get into the groove or you might have to rethink your set because you’re expecting something else etc. A good warm up DJ is building and warming up the dance floor, not playing all the hits and deliver the crowd boiling and ready for the main act to take it off. Both can still deliver as good and interesting sets.

Would you ever go back to work as a pharmacist? Are there any transferable skills?

I doubt it, I hope I will have a long life in music. But you’ll never know what the future brings for you. I worked hard as a pharmacist running different projects for the HQ and that project planning I feel I can use now too, in a way project planning your self and your future, trying to be disciplined and take your work that s now music serious.

How did you hook up with LNOE? Did you meet Sasha in person or send music or…?

Sasha was giving good feedback and charting some of my music which lead to us getting in contact. I sent him some music and then the idea of a collab track came up. Sasha is a busy guy, so the collab track got delayed and we decided to release an EP from me on the label first. We should finish the track before the end of this year and then it will see the light on LNOE early next year, very excited about that!

And did you write music for his label specifically, know its style, or did you just do your do? Since he know my music from before and was interested I decided it was best to do me but I am always trying to improve and evolve so maybe it sounds a bit different, hard for me to tell.

What else have you got going up/are you working on?

My new Make A Move EP will be released on Watergate 19th of October. I also recently released a remix for Ane Brun’s ‘Shape Of A Heart’. My label Power Plant is celebrating 5 years and we have some special celebrations planned for that too, releasing a VA compilation and re-issuing Flowerhead with some new cool remixes. I am also very excited to visit US from November to do another tour there, staying a bit longer and also touring Brazil and Mexico in January.

What do you like to do away from music, how do you spend your free time?

Trying to relax and recharge, spending time with my family, doing some kind of bodywork and eat good food.
