Mark Henning

The Berlin maestro flips another winning hand on Poker Flat with the mighty ‘Pusher’ EP

Interview by Dan Prince

Mark a massive welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Today I am Berlin Dan.”

What was the first piece of  music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

“’Pixies – ‘Here Comes Your Man’ on the radio…”

A stunning way to start 2015 with the release of your new track, please tell us about the history and sounds of your ‘Pusher’ EP…loving the ‘somebody let me get my shit’ vocal…

“Thanks. This track actually came together very quickly. Once I had the vocal and main bass hook I managed to wrap it all up in a week or so (it can take me a lot longer!). It was the last track to be finished out of a selection I sent to Steve Bug after he contacted me a few months before.”

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

Ethyl & Flori – The Last Ninja

Dona – 15Th Point (Anthony Shake Shakir Rmx)

Die Roh – XM 11

Eddie Richards – I Move

Legowelt – Bayville Cove

Who do you count as your big Berlin music buddies?

“You probably won’t believe me but I don’t hang out with any other DJs or artists.”

And what is the best and worst thing about living in Berlin?

“Best = Summer

Worst = The Dog Shit.”

One of the reasons you moved to what is now probably the most important music hub in the world, was that you wanted a break from the UK and your wife got a job there. Your second choice was Barcelona, why?

“It was purely a job thing…my wife works in Science and there were some opportunities in Barcelona at the time. Of course Berlin was first choice as I’d lived here before and loved it.”

A DJ date in your diary you cannot wait for this year?

“I’m really looking forward to playing at the Wooded Festival in Wrocław, Poland in June.”

True or False? You saw Michael Jackson live in 1984?

“True – in Miami, I was 7.”

A festival moment you’d rather forget?

“Reading 1996…I got sooooo sick.”

You have been setting the world’s dancefloors alight for over ten years thanks to bombs such as ‘With The Folks’, ‘Jessy Barbaron’, ‘The Right Time’ EP and of course your debut album ‘Jupiter Jive’ on Soma. Looking back, what piece of work are you most proudest of?

“Some of favourites – S’all Good, Trojan, Breakfast Club, Furious George, Me, You and I, Exit Acid, Soul Catcher, Stash House.”

An album in your collection we’d be surprised to discover?

“Pavement – Slanted & Enchanted.”

An up and coming producer to watch out for in 2015?

“No idea!?”

Your favourite drum & bass track from the late 90s?

“Ed Rush & Optical – ‘Funktion’.”

3 bucket list adventures you’d like to do in your lifetime…

“Fly a jumbo jet.

Wrestle a bear.

Jump/parachute off The Shard in London.”

A person from history you’d like to have a pint with?

“Henry VIII.”

Not many people know this, but Mark Henning is really good at…

“Golf (swap ‘really good’ with ‘quite good’).”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“An EP on Soma Records in May, then another release on my own label ‘Swing’ in July.”
