Rehmark & Nukkah

Big new tune ‘You Want Me/I Want You’ blasting out on Acid Traxx

Interview by Nicky Trax

Rehmark welcome to DMCWORLD…how and where did you guys meet up and start making music?

“We met at a gig and really connected quite fast due to our very similar musical tastes. So we decided to produce together some tracks to see how it worked and we’ve not stopped since. I think our union works very well, and we’re also free to work on separate productions.”

What was your first release and what happened with it and who supported it?

“It was Steve Parker who first believed in our music and gave us the opportunity for our first release ‘Nephilim’ on his label Spark Musik. It was supported by artists such as Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola, Tom Hades and Skober amongst others…”

I understand that Rehmark is a regular guest DJ in Ibiza’s clubs during the summer and has played at Space, Monza and Privilege. What were your 2014 highlights?

“Last summer we played at clubs like Space and Amnesia, but we were focused on defining our own sound together and immersed in our little studio. Like everything in life, we also evolved and it is necessary to set parameters before letting go. Being part of the family on a label like Afro Acid Traxx for example is one of our highlights! With artists like DJ Pierre, he has all our respect and admiration.”

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’tg heard your music?

“Easy…“electronic music from deep house to techno”. We like to combine several styles, express different emotions and we believe that everything you do in the studio must have a sound that leaves it’s own mark. A sound that everyone can tell it’s a Rehmark & Nukkah production! It’s not easy, we know, but we won’t stop trying.”

Can you tell us what’s coming up from you in terms of productions, remixes and future projects…

“Next year I’m playing at 4Every1, which is an extremely important step for my career because it’s one of the most important festivals in Spain. I am also finalising details for the birth of a new label and this project also really excites me. There’s also new releases on labels like Tulipa coming soon but I can’t really say anything more…“speak loudly about the present and, very quietly about the future”…”

How did you get signed to DJ Pierre’s Afro Acid Traxx label…he must have been a personal hero for you surely?

“I’ve DJ’d for the last 16 years working in clubs and I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy meeting many artists and follow their work in detail. DJ Pierre has our respect and we’ve followed him for so long now. He believed and opened the door for us onto one of his labels and it ‘s a great pleasure for us. We are very happy and grateful.”

What have been some of your highlights over the years?

“Music has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. I feel privileged, doing what I like! There are always better and worse times, but I couldn’t live without it. Drums, bass, the joy of people who enjoy us…it’s what I want and what makes me feel good!”

How do you manage to keep it fresh, new and vital?

“I try not to be pressured by fads or styles and I just try to be myself. Of course we stay ahead on the software level and explore new ways of creating sounds but the most important thing is quality, and not quantity.”

Is there any one track that you’re particularly proud of?

“I believe in every one of our releases that I edit, and I always think the best is yet to come.”

You grew up in Madrid and then moved to Miami and then London. How much of an influence did the neighbourhoods around you have on your path towards music?

“My stay in London was very positive and helped reinvent my techno side. It’s amazing the benefit you get when you decide to leave your own comfort bubble. The artists who have really influenced me are people like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Danny Tenaglia and bands like Depeche Mode and U2!”

So what does the future hold for you?

“As I mentioned, this year I play the Spanish festival 4Every1 which is an extremely important step for me. I am also finalising details for the birth of a new label, which is also really exciting. I’ll continue enjoying my time in the studio and visiting new clubs around the world.”
