Ryan Blyth

‘Special’…a hot contender for secret weapon of the festival season

Interview by Dan Prince

Ryan a massive welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Hey Dan, I’m currently in Mirfield in the UK.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

It’s a track I’m working on, at this stage I have called the project Dirty Shit!!

Lovely. So a big month coming up for you with the release of ‘Special’ on CUFF/Island. Please talk us through the history and sound of the track you created with After 6 and Chicago born singer Luther Soul…

I was working with after 6 on some other projects when we got together on Special.  We decided it required someone with SOUL so we searched on the internet, we was looking for ages as we knew this track was special it deserved someone with a unique sound. Then we stumbled on Luther Soul on a talent website, we checked out his demo on the player and we knew straight away he was the one. Luther then came to the studio and recorded the vocals it was at this point I had to work my magic to produce a hit.

Chicago ties us nicely into how Ryan Blyth has got to the position of being one of the UK’s most exciting producers of the year. Let’s rewind. We know the likes of Van Helden and Morillo were early influences, but what is your earliest memory as a child?

Carl Cox and Jeremy Healy is probably the earliest memory.

At what age did dance music start to rear it’s pretty head and what were the sources you hooked into it by?

I was about 15 years old when I first got hooked on dance music, it was tracks like Robin S, Bucketheads and Delacy that got me hyped.

The first club you walked into and thought, ‘fuck me…this is what I want to do for a living’?

Beyond Beach Babylon

What did your family think of your choice of career? Was there something else they wanted you to do?

My mum used to say “when you gonna get a proper job”. But they are really supportive of my choice of career now.

Your first big break?

I’d have to say it was last year when I started working with CUFF,  I had some good stuff in the past but working with these guys is on another level.

Ibiza is rolling up it’s sleeves for another mammoth season, you’ll be returning to Sankeys for some superb house action. Can you remember the first time you ever stepped onto the island, what did you think?

This place is crazy, I love it.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each…

– DJ Haus – Another Place

When this one drops, actions speak louder than words

– Sanxero Mr V – Lets Freak

I really dig the groove on this, it’s simple but effective.

– David Zowie – House Every Weekend

It been doing the rounds but the crowds love it

– Murk Vs Arther baker  – Miami

Words can’t describe it.

…and of course Ryan Blyth & After 6 Ft Luther Soul – SPECIAL – Trust in me and you will see…

Cuff returns to Ministry of Sound on May 9th where you’ll be joined by Felix Da Housecat – man that guy used to party in Ibiza. Who down at Sankeys on the white isle do you enjoy a pint with when they are on the island?

Chris Lorenzo he’s a party monster

Some summer gigs you’re looking forward to?

Obviously Sankeys Ibiza. But I’m looking forward to the Outbreak Festival and also Parked Out.

What are 3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime?

Travel in to space

Sail around the world on my own yacht

Play at Tomorrowland

An up and coming producer/DJ to watch out for in 2015?

Thomas Graham

In today’s DJ world where everyone and their dog wants to play records, how hard do you think it is for an artist to break through unless they have a big tune nestling on their laptop ready to explode?

I think it’s so hard to breakthrough these days, it not just about having big tracks on your computer its making connections with people who can get them where they need to be.

Not many people know this, but Ryan Blyth is really good at…

Cooking

An album in your collection you’d rather us not knowing about…

Greatest Hits of the 80’s

It’s your birthday. Dead or alive, the 3 dudes you ask to come and play for you…

Dj Ez, Boy George and P Diddy

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

SHOW ME which features the awesome voice of Malisha Bleau…
