Two of the fastest emerging producers in the UK get ready for Egg London

Interview by Rob Chadwick

How was 2014 for you now you look back? What was good, bad and ugly?

“We had a lot of fun in 2014 – playing wicked festivals and seeing mad parts of Europe. Playing in Iceland where the sun doesn’t go down for a month was pretty out there…and Glastonbury has to be at the top. One of the funniest sets we’ve played – that place is magical.”

Will you aim to do anything differently in 2015…any big goals?

“We want to be twice as productive as we were in 2014. We’re also going to experiment a bit more with other sounds and ideas…and stop biting our finger nails!”

How did you guys first meet and why did you start working together?

“We met in Leeds when we had first started studying there through a good mutual friend and a love of electronic music. Before we knew it, wedding bells were ringing!”

How has your relationship changed over the last couple of years since you broke through?

“It’s quite a weird transition going from being mates messing around on the computer to suddenly playing some quite big venues. It makes it seem a lot more serious! We can sometimes have different ideas in direction but we always meet in the middle and think that’s what’s good about working in a duo – different influences and ideas merge together to create something fresh. Spending a lot of time together, sharing the good times and the bad has now made us brothers from other mothers.”

What have been the best, worst and hardest things you have learnt?

“Best – Playing a great set, when there’s a great vibe is one of the best things you can experience in life.

Worst – That time is never on your side, you’ve got to be productive all the time.

Hardest – Learning to make sure you get that beauty sleep – it’s easy to get fully involved in the party, three days on the trot with little sleep will make a man ill!”

Have you made any new year resolutions, what are they and have you managed to keep them if so?

“Drink more water, be more focused and finish an ever-growing pile of tracks.”

Are you always writing music or only when inspired or influenced by something? Do you have an audience in mind when producing?

“The audience is never the driving force behind the track, we’ve always felt you should make music for yourself – sounds selfish but music should be an output of you and your emotions. In terms of when we write music, it’s a mix of both really. Sometimes we’ll hear a sample or a great track and get really inspired and ideas flow out like mad, other times we just sit down and see what comes out.”

And what is your process like – are you a sketchier or a meticulous guy who craft every sound perfectly?

“We often sketch our ideas out to make sure the idea is translated to sound before it’s forgotten, then there is always a lengthy process of fine tuning and re-recording anything that isn’t quite right. Sometimes the process strays off tangent but the final product is valued more after you spend some good time and thought with it.”

You play the DJ Mag Sessions soon – how do you feel about that? Do you still read DJ Mag?

“Yes, for sure. Honoured to be asked…and really excited to play.”

What else you got coming up/are you looking forward to?

“We have a new EP coming out on Madhouse records in March/April, as well as a remix of an exciting new band called Prides. We are also contributing tracks to a couple of compilations which you’ll be hearing about soon. We are really looking forward to our first time in Geneva at the end of the month, sharing the bill with some artists we love but haven’t had the chance to see before: Mr. G, Mike Huckaby, Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell. Big fans of Krivit’s edits! Kerri is playing too and we always have a ball with him.”
