Los Suruba

Madrid’s prolific producers causing riots down at Ushuaia

Interview : Dan Prince

Delmar, Alvaro welcome to DMCWORLD – a stunning summer under way in Ibiza at your Ants residency amongst others, but before we get into that, let’s rewind a little. You met at design school in Madrid, formed a friendship and began putting on parties together. What though was the plan with the design school studying, what did you want to before music enveloped you both?

Delmar – “Well I started spinning records five years before studying at the design school. Music and design were my passions and for me the idea was to combine both of them.”

Alvaro – “I met Delmar at the design school and he taught me how to play and we started putting on parties together. At first Suruba was created as a label for events and parties.”

When did you get into dance music, who were the early DJs and clubs you fell in love with back in the day?

Delmar – “I started DJing rap, reggae funk but I got into dance music in 1997. 1997-2002 was a great age for electronic music in Madrid, the laws for clubs and afterhours were totally different and we had great clubs like Alien, 101, Coppelia, Room, Deep, Lp, Cream…I liked artists like John Digweed, John Creamer & Stephan K, Murk, Infusion…”

Alvaro –At first I listened to a lot more techno than I do now, I liked artists like Sven Väth, Anthony Rother and Richie Hawtin.”

Madrid is one of these magical cities that doesn’t shout from the rooftops how good their scene is or perhaps was? Have things turned sour in your eyes?

The Scene in Madrid 10 years ago was very different from now. With the new laws and the political mismanagement, the scene gone very downhill.”

For our readers who haven’t yet enjoyed a weekend in Madrid, where are the clubs that are on fire right now they should venture to?

The best party of Madrid is Goa, a monthly daytime party on a Sunday, with some areas, open air and great lineups at Fabrik club.”

Who are your big DJ/producer friends in Madrid?

Henry Saiz, a very good producer and a very good friend.”

You DJ’d at the Coruña Festival on Saturday night alongside the likes of Carl Craig, Dave Clarke and John Digweed. That looked a whole lot of fun, how did it go?

It was great! Very good atmosphere, good crowd…it’s always really cool to play with some of the big names of the scene.”

You own the Suruba Records label, a four tiered company that has scene an obscene amount of reviews since it’s conception in 2007. What are the next release plans over the summer for your artists?

We are working hard on the second album which will be released on the label, it will come with the help of a talented young French guy called Rafael Murillo, we are also working on this album as well as remixes from artists like Siopis, Samu.l, Atapy, Pherox, Jorge Takei and other major producers.”

Your ‘Fayer’ track has been smashing dancefloors around the globe these last couple of months, what are you guys bringing out next?

“We did an Edu Imbernon remix track that will be released on Stil Vor Talent at the end of July.”

Who brings what to the studio, who where excelsa?

Delmar works more in the artistic matters (producing, mixing, artwork) and I work in the organization and management of the labels and everything related to Los Suruba.”

But we both enjoy participating in all matters relating to Suruba.

Do you ever argue?

Yes sometimes but is good to know each other’s point of view.”

Your Los Suruba name has obvious connotations to mad, wild parties and orgies. Would do Is that what your house in Ibiza is like this summer?

We hope so haha!”

Okay so lets talk about Ibiza. One of the biggest talking points over the Spring months was the arrival of ANTS down at Ushuaia. When were you approached about a residency and what did you think about the whole project?

“ANTS and all the colony are amazing, Ushuaia is one of the best clubs in the world, we are super happy to be a part of it and we think that Ants is one of the hottest party of the season.”

The season kicked off a couple of weeks ago, how has it been down at the mighty Ushuaia?

“Dan – amazing!”

Why do you love spinning at Ushuaia, why is it so good?

As we said before Ushuaia is one of the best club in the world, all the people that works there are super professional and we feel really comfortable playing there.

Can you tell us about the first trip to Ibiza, where did you go and what were your initial thoughts on the island?

Delmar “My first trip to Ibiza was amazing, it was in 1998, Ibiza was totally different to what we know now, I fell in love with the island and from that trip. From then on it was a dream that one day I would play for a big club in Ibiza and that I would live there. This year the both have dreams come true!”

Alvaro  “The first time I came to Ibiza to party was 15 years ago at Pacha, that changed the way I see clubs, it was all new to me, but it was not until five years later I returned with Delmar and really found out how special and fun the island is.”

Who from the Ants colony are the craziest party freaks?

The red ANTS.”

And finally, what is going to be the anthem of summer 2013…?

Ten Walls – ‘Gotham’.”

Ants takes place at Ushuaia, Ibiza every Saturday midday – midnight…
