Skrillex live!

Bass in your face London

2011 has undoubtedly been Skrillex’ breakout year on the global stage. Pushing the boundaries of electronic music he has become one of the few DJ / Producers on the scene today that truly has a style of his own. His unique brand of dubstep, electro and glitch has caught the imagination of the planets dancefloors and dominated the airwaves over the last 12 months.

Skrillex aka Sonny Moore kick started his career early, dabbling in electronic tracks from the tender age of 14 his early influences include The Prodigy, Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails.  Over the years, his dedication in fine tuning his craft has earned Sonny a place among the big boys of the club world and a career as one of the most sought after remixers and producers.

Ahead of his Grey Daze 2012 tour, the main man last week hit the UK capital. Journalists weren’t allowed in, such is the Skrillex mystery tour. DMC’s Tillie Wood didn’t see that as a problem however…

“Koko in Camden: iconic venue and a killer line up that saw Wednesday night packed out with some serious bass addicts ready for the Skrillex fix. Flux Pavilion had the crowd bouncing to his heavy dub from the offset, everyone rolling as he amped it up and then let it drop. Near the end of his superb set he yelled “scream if you wanna go faster” before ramping the BPM to frantic and sending the already hyped crowd into oblivion. Overdrive already. Sonny ‘Skrillex’ Moore, is quite simply, a cult hero turned powerhouse in the electro dub scene with a legion of fans the world over. Tonight the show had sold out in minutes with tickets changing hands outside for over £200. Hence is the magic of this young man. The silhouette behind his Macbook, all hair and glasses, jumping around looked almost maniacal as the C02 blasted skywards. The crowd knew every lyric and weren’t afraid to show their appreciation, especially during the call and response “My name is…!” which featured numerous times throughout the night. Skrillex in turn gave back to them, with his abundant energy and frequent shout outs throughout his set which featured a mixture of electro, dubstep, breakbeat and a touch of classic hip hop. Like all the arts, music is subjective and when it comes to Skrillex the crowd really divides. To some his style is aggressive and loud but to me it’s descriptive and genius. His tracks are narratives, painting pictures as they go. My highlights were ‘Ruffneck’ and ‘Cinema’ both sounding exceptional on the KoKo system. Skrillex really has helped the evolution and expansion of the Dub scene. His epic Nu metal inspired style crosses over yet another genre and with this diversifies the listenership. For me, I like my dose of dub dark and dirty, which is exactly where Skrillex excels. His meteoric rise to the top of this scene is a testament to his musical flair and imagination. He thoroughly deserves the success and long may it continue for the Sub smashing, stage diving Sprite!
